| User ReviewHaneef AAda Apa Dengan Cinta 2 (AADC 2) is an Indonesian romantic movie directed by Riri Riza, and produced by Mira Lesmana; a sequel to the celebrated hit original Ada Apa Dengan Cinta (2002). The original cast is back, with Dian Sastrowardoyo and Nicholas Saputra reprising the main characters Cinta and Rangga respectively. 14 years have passed since the original movie. Rangga is working in the US, who had to suddenly return to Indonesia due to urgent family matters. Cinta meanwhile is engaged to Trian, and runs her own gallery/cafe. Cinta's band of friends also return in this movie, with their own married/complicated lives. The plot is regrettably basic; however what makes this movie good is the strong characterization of the characters and the enjoyable amazing chemistry between them. Dian and Nicholas play against each other very well, their relationship felt organic, natural and believable. The friendship bond between Cinta and her friends from high school is also heartfelt and wistful, especially the bond between Cinta and Karmen (Adinia Wirasti). Eventhough the plot is simple, I still find the story enjoyable, heartfelt and relatable. The story focused on whether Cinta and Rangga will mend their relationship after their painful breakup 9 years ago. It also focus on the still strong friendship between Cinta and her friends, eventhough they have all progressed/moved on in their lives. If the original was primarily Cinta's story, I felt this movie is Rangga's story. Rangga's personality has some changes; he is more sympathetic, more forthcoming/brave/confident, and less reclusive. I really love the subtle and romantic efforts that Rangga did to win Cinta's heart back. Yogyakarta, the city that almost 75% the movie is filmed in, is a strong character in itself. Having spent 6 years in there myself, I find Yogya is deftly represented in the movie, with the city's mystique/culture/people excellently depicted. Recommended for romantic movie fans, fans of the original movie, and people who have lived in Yogya. A personal A- |
