Spirituality and PracticeFrederic and Mary Ann BrussatA wonderfully human portrait of a family facing a crisis that brings them all to a deeper, richer, and more rewarding life together in love.
Deadline Hollywood DailyPete HammondSuperb acting from a great ensemble including the role of his career for Robert Forster in a moving film where if you don't shed a tear you are probably dead inside.
New York Magazine (Vulture)David EdelsteinThere’s raw power in Chomko’s writing, but so much scrupulousness and craft that you feel safe when the time comes to weep.
New York ObserverOliver JonesThe intimacy and honesty of the family rapport, the razor sharp dialogue and—most unexpectedly—its deeply grounded humor keep the film and its slight and compassionate story utterly engaging.
National Newspaper Publishers Association Dwight BrownStellar performances by the entire cast, especially Shannon, give a window into a cautionary tale. Almost as riveting as Manchester by the Sea. Excellent in other ways.
812filmreviewsRobert DanielsWhat they Had is a pure actor driven film, equal parts stirring, heart breaking, and hilarious.
Chicago Sun-TimesRichard RoeperThere’s something quite beautiful and quite melancholy and sometimes achingly relatable about the tone of writer-director Elizabeth Chomko’s lovely and memorable What They Had, which is based in part on the Chicago-born Chomko’s own family history.
Reeling ReviewsLaura CliffordAlthough there are a couple of wobbles, "What They Had" is buoyed by its terrific cast, Chicago locations and a surprising moment of spiritual grace in its third act.
Toronto StarBruce DeMaraWhat sets the film apart is the literate and insightful script by Elizabeth Chomko, who also directs, and a cast of stellar performers.
MovieFreak.comSara Michelle FettersThe movie manages to avoid nearly every "family dealing with illness" cliché one could ever imagine.
