New York TimesLaura KernHis directorial debut, What Is It? -- which plays as part of a double bill with a live, enthusiastically performed slide show in which Mr. Glover displays pages from his recent series of books -- is just as unclassifiable as he is.
EricDSnider.comEric D. SniderIt's weirdness for weirdness' sake, and while I disagree fundamentally with a film that has no purpose other than to make you go 'huh ... that was odd,' I do concede that most of the weirdness in this case is at least interesting weirdness.
L.A. WeeklyScott FoundasIt's clear that [director] Glover is less interested in narrative than in rekindling a rich midnight-movie/avant-garde tradition that encompasses everything from Maya Deren and Jack Smith to Alejandro Jodorowsky and David Lynch.
Eye for FilmAmber WilkinsonIt isn't the blatant affronts - the aspects aimed to shock - that upset me, but the fact that the film lacks heart.
User ReviewTerri MUnique, funny, bizarre, and downright fascinating. The images in this film will not soon leave you. It will definitely challenge the senses of some. I seen this as part of Crispin Glover's Big Slide show. The book reading before the film was a real trip! An extraordinary treat for anyone who seeks something a little different in their entertainment.
User ReviewMichael ATo be fair, it could be a single wide shot of a snail yelling for 72 minutes and I'd still give it 5 stars. Crispin Glover means your argument is void. It's amazing.
User ReviewBarton KCrispin Glover's auteur demi-god masterpiece(in which he plays). Gathering such influences as diverse as Al Jolson and Werner Herzog, "What is it?" forces you to become part of the experience. Most will be put off or offended by the film immediately. Scenes of cerebral palsy sexual encounters, down syndrome carried out snail killings, and swastika ornaments make for taboo cinematic success. Great tunes by Charles Manson intensify the experience. Highly Recommended!
User ReviewPeter WCrispin Glover's masterpiece of uncomfortable imagery and parody of art house films is F'ing awesome. It's up there with The Holy Mountain and Singapore Sling in terms of crazy badassness.
User ReviewDawn LI have seen "What Is It?" and I find it to be a trip down everyone's inner self that they refuse to explore.. I want to see it again! -Dawn
