Movie Reviews

The Spectator - 6/10 by Penelope HoustonA confusion of spectacular aerial shots, romantic slow- motion calvary charges, mumbled high command conferences and deafening artillery.
TIME Magazine - 6/10 by Stefan KanferAs for the golden history and legend, they lie buried beneath this delayed replay of a primer on strategy.
Chicago Sun-Times - 5/10 by Roger EbertBondarchuk is so overwhelmed by the thousands of Russian cavalry troops he's been given to play with, and by his $25 million budget, and by-his obsession for aerial photography, that his leading characters turn out scarcely more human than his extras.
User Review - 10/10 by Michael FThis film is marvellous. I laughed heartily at the line "I sometimes think armies have better things to do than shoot at each other" Steiger brings Napoleon to life in front of your eyes with a brilliant performance.
User Review - 10/10 by Johari TWaterloo is a film that everyone should see. It is an epic film the like that does not get made anymore. Forget Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, this is a true epic, a story of the Emperor Napoleons final bid to restore his Empire on the bloody field of Waterloo in 1815. Napoleon played by Rod Stieger is mesmerising as is Christopher Plummer as Wellington. I certainly think that it would be almost impossible for a remake of this to better the sheer scale and drama of this epic.... Of course it's not perfect and there is some corny scenes such as Uxbridge -i've lost my leg ( he did say this apparently) amid others, but this don't detract from a great movie as men in this era did carry a sense of the dramatic. Many who have'nt seen this film beleive that the Battle of Waterloo was an English victory. It was'nt! Only in the loosest sense of the term. Waterloo was a battle of three armies, with the Prussian army under Marshal Blucher playing a major part as this film shows, even though the film gives the impression that they only arrive at the last minute.... A 4 hour extended version of this film is said to exist somewhere. I'd love to see it. To my mind this is the finest war film ever made and it's sad to see it so underrated as it deserves better.

User Review - 10/10 by Private U"Waterloo" sets the standard for all 'big battle' war movies (that is, those that are as much about panning across thousands of extras as they are about close-ups and fine acting). Steiger steals the show with his ranting portrayal of a Napoleon past his prime. Plummer is perfect as Wellington, a fastidious and heroic commander. At some points it is obvious that this is not an American film - the cinematography is curious in some scenes and Red Army extras scream like schoolgirls when they fall (oh, and Waterloo is a relatively flat area - the battle wasn't fought on opposing treeless mountains). These minor shortcomings are offset by the film's unparalleled scale. Watching hundreds of cavalrymen (and unfortunate untrained horses!) hurl themselves at squares of scarlet to the brilliantly chaotic score by legendary Nino Rota, the viewer walks away all but certain that he has in fact seen the actual Battle of Waterloo. Vive l'Empereur!
User Review - 10/10 by Robert Fclassic, well made, historically as accurate as it can be and superb acting if a little 70's
User Review - 10/10 by WK JTake the high ground, you...Hey, that's what they did!
User Review - 10/10 by John STruly epic war film with amazing battle scenes especially when you realise that there was no CGI when this was made and that the battle scenes actually do have up to 20,000 people (soldiers on loan from the soviet army) in them as opposed to the 20 actual people used in 300. Accurate retelling of the story of Waterloo and excellent portrayals of Napoleon & Wellington. The charge of the scots greys in particular looks superb.
