Movie Reviews

Las Vegas CityLife - 9/10 by Matt KelemenDe Villa has a light touch that instills the film with a certain charm that saves the day
indieWire - 8/10 by Brandon JudellConsidering the money this film cost to make, its short shooting schedule, and its unpandering ethnic content, it's a triumph.
One Guy's Opinion - 8/10 by Frank SwietekAn affecting reworking of a traditional story, told with passion, sensitivity, and a little clumsiness.
Miami Herald - 8/10 by Rene RodriguezBuoyed by strong performances from Perez and Miami-resident Milian, Washington Heights overcomes the familiarity of its premise through its passion and conviction.
Christian Science Monitor - 8/10 by David SterrittDe Villa's debut film is persuasively written and acted, if a tad rougher around the edges than one might wish.
Village Voice - 8/10 by Edward CrouseOne-upping Latino immigrant movies like "Luminarias" and "Tortilla Soup," Washington Heights zeroes in on go-getters (mostly of Dominican lineage) whose ambitions are transformed by familial demands.
Hollywood Reporter - 8/10 by David HunterWhen the film shows the awkwardness of the lead's caregiver relationship with his cranky father, De Villa finds material that's compelling, but such complications as the girlfriend's violent brother going ballistic and tragedy ensuing are rugged cliches.
Oregonian - 7/10 by Kim MorganThe performances are uniformly fine, with Perez showing a heavy amount of presence and complexity. It's no wonder the film works best when fixed on his face.
Spirituality and Practice - 7/10 by Frederic and Mary Ann BrussatA fine Latino film exploring the transformation of a conflict-ridden relationship between a Dominican-born store owner and his comic book illustrator son.
Newark Star-Ledger - 7/10 by Bob CampbellMotivations slide right off the page ... Storylines are snipped short and major characters become bystanders.
