Antagony & Ecstasy - 7/10 by Tim BraytonEverybody involved seems to have held the project in some kind of contempt, putting in no effort at all.
User Review - 10/10 by Andrew PThis is the original japanese version of varan the unbeilable, it was truly an amazing film, this version is better than the american version staring Myron Healey. for all you Godzilla fans out there, If you haven't this version please do you will not be disappointed, one other thing FORGET the american version.
User Review - 8/10 by Jason NGreat movie. Even better when it's in black and white.
User Review - 8/10 by Private UVery good kaiju eiga. Not sure why we didn't see much more of Varan other than "Destroy All Monsters" but I guess being in the shadow of Gojira doesn't help matters much.
User Review - 8/10 by Christopher JIt's cheesy but it's still an absolutely fun kaiju movie. And I loved the lack of plot. It's just monster awesomeness really, start to finish. :D I seriously enjoyed how it was done. Good for the hardcore audience. I also do think GMK may've been even cooler if Varan had been one of the monsters. But that's me.
User Review - 6/10 by Jason DVaran (a.k.a. Baran) represents the end of an era in several ways. Not only does it wrap up the 50's era begun with Godzilla, it's also the last of Toho's black and white kaiju films. Also, while it's hardly the last Toho film to rely entirely on a new monster, it does clearly mark the point at which Toho's stream of new creations would be less memorable than the recurring stable. Also, Varan is unusually derivative of previous Toho films (especially the original Godzilla) to a degree more expected from a lesser, rip-off studio than the big guys themselves. Seriously, there is NOTHING in this film that hadn't already been done better multiple times by this point. Oh, and then there's Varan himself. I'm sorry, but this lumpy, awkward crossbreed of Godzilla and the later Baragon is one of the least impressive Kaiju Toho ever built a movie around. He's dull, forgetable, and not the least bit imposing. In fact, even director Ishiro Honda seems to be a little embarassed over the guy, shooting him almost excusively from dull, far away angles. Oh, and then there's the AWFUL flying squirel wings. It's not hard to see why poor ol' Varan returned so rarely. It's nice to see another genuinely serious Kaiju film (no Kenny), but it's too cookie cutter to be interesting to more than Kaiju faithful. (By the way, although it was called "Varan the Unbelievable," the movie I saw was actually the uncut version of "Daikaijū Baran" with the title of the Amarican dub. Confused yet?)
User Review - 6/10 by Adam FA bit boring, and uses some stock footage from the original Godzilla, but it has good monster moments. Varan is an interesting kaiju who doesn't get used too much. The film is alright and the characters are decent, but it's not the best kaiju film.
User Review - 6/10 by Vincent PI don't think this is a bad movie by any means but I've seen much better Kaiju films than this. It seemed kind of forced and is almost a rehash of Godzilla or Rodan; prehistoric monster wakes up, starts attacking things on an island, blah blah I believe we've seen that one. It's refreshing to see new Kaiju every now and again, but compared to some of the others, Varan is pretty weak. Definitely not Honda's best film.
User Review - 6/10 by Patrick GPretty lackluster entry in the Kaiju eiga series, but not wholly bad. The thing to disappoint fans is the film is very calm and relaxed, which is a nice change of pace, but probably not fully needed. Varan is one of the most wrongfully unliked monsters of the Godzilla line-up, which is disconcerting since he isn't even all that bad, and should have a come-back. The music from Akira Ifukube is probably his best work to date, and if not the best musical scores for any movie period! One very annoying aspect of the movie is the [accidental] stock-footage of "Gojira" that reoccurringly pops up.
User Review - 4/10 by Ralph RA great monster design wasted on a rather dull and half-baked picture, which plods along without doing much with its premise. A rare miss for Honda.
