Just days before Bernard Madoff captured headlines as the largest ponzi schemer in U.S. history, Marc Dreier, a prominent Manhattan attorney, was arrested for orchestrating a massive fraud scheme that netted over 700 Million Dollars from hedge funds. Brazen forgeries and impersonations branded the white collar crime spree remarkable. "Unraveled" is set in the "purgatory" of house arrest, an upper East Side penthouse, where the Court has ordered Dreier confined until his sentencing day. The film weaves Dreier's struggle to prepare for the possibility of life imprisonment with first-person flashbacks, which reveal his audacious path of destruction. Destroyed by his own hubris, Dreier attempts to grasp his tragic unraveling. With unprecedented access, "Unraveled" exposes a mastermind of criminal deception.

Movie Reviews

Newsday - 9/10 by John AndersonAs both man and metaphor, Drier is a pretty potent subject.
The New York Times - 9/10 by Jeannette CatsoulisBolstered by animated re-enactments and Bob Richman's frosty cinematography, Unraveled is a mesmerizing one-man dive into narcissism, entitlement and unchecked greed.
Slant Magazine - 9/10 by Chuck BowenMarc H. Simon's documentary has the thrust of a great American noir or black comedy.
The Hollywood Reporter - 7/10 by Stephen FarberThe fascinating human portrait that emerges should draw appreciative if limited audiences.
PopMatters - 6/10 by Sarah Boslaugh...you have to give Dreier style points; [even Bernie] Madoff never flew to Toronto to impersonate a representative of the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan...
Los Angeles Times - 6/10 by Sam AdamsIf Simon's hands-off approach precludes a thorough stock-taking of Dreier's misdeeds - numbers alone hardly tell the full story - the movie's subject obligingly avails himself of the ample rope.
Hollywood & Fine - 6/10 by Marshall FineAn intriguingly intimate portrait of someone who was convinced he wasn't destined to be one of the little people - and paid the price for trying to prove otherwise.
Village Voice - 4/10 by Eric HynesIt's a fascinating fishbowl in concept, yet Simon's storytelling is unevenly textured and oddly listless - fatal for a film about a banal document - pushing felon clock-watching to a known outcome.
Time Out - 4/10 by Andrew SchenkerIn allowing Dreier to shape his own narrative, too many lame excuses are allowed to pass, as the financial schemer spins his own story dangerously close to self-pity.
tonymacklin.net - 3/10 by Tony MacklinUnraveled is a con job. It has the clammy hands of its crooked main figure all over it. Unraveled is a prime example of why one sometimes should be skeptical of a documentary.
