Movie Reviews

Little White Lies - 8/10 by Hannah WoodheadA refreshingly empathetic take on familiar subject matter.
Battle Royale With Cheese - 8/10 by Benjamin GummeryThe film perfectly captures the quiet depression of the British seaside and the troubles some young people in less that ideal situations suffer on a daily basis just by existing.
Empire Magazine - 8/10 by Beth WebbSweet but not sentimental, sad but not cynical, Two For Joy is a welcome new take on a British realism with disarmingly impressive performances from its young cast.
Times (UK) - 8/10 by Ed PottonIt's a sombre British drama in the spirit of Andrea Arnold and Clio Barnard: unforced and superbly acted, with fleeting moments of beauty to leaven the gloom.
Metro (UK) - 8/10 by Larushka Ivan-ZadehSensitively realised and soundscaped, there's an almost unbearable tension surrounding these damaged, volatile characters who encounter danger at every turn - mainly from themselves.
Guardian - 6/10 by Peter BradshawA confident, good-looking, heartfelt film in the pastoral social-realist style, with strong performances from an excellent cast, including Samantha Morton and Daniel Mays.
Sunday Times (UK) - 6/10 by Edward PorterIt's well acted, but in its adherence to some of the current trends in social realism--a young person's viewpoint, a slightly arty style--it's a bit too generic for its own good.
Film Inquiry - 6/10 by Becky KuklaTwo for Joy is desperate and demanding, but it offers something which is rarely allowed in films which depict poverty. It offers hope.
CineVue - 6/10 by Caitlin QuinlanThere are some moments when the script feels somewhat insincere. Strong performances, however, especially from the kids, elevate the muted atmosphere and add a richness to the story.
User Review - 10/10 by Steve NA touching story about family , loss, depression and the struggle to go on after losing a partner. Sprinkled with humour and intensely emotional beats, this movie is a great directorial start for Tom Beard. The young actors stand out with amazing performances. Particularly Bella Ramsey (Worst Witch, Game of Thrones) who plays Miranda. Her performance displays an intensity that will both shock and delight you with her abilities. This movie tugs at your heart strings playing a tune both inventive and familiar to many of us.
