The Spectator - 10/10 by Hilary MantelThis is a wild and unnecessarily noisy film, with confusion and violence that becomes hysterical and outgrows its context.

User Review - 10/10 by mirabella 1TRACK 29 (1988) Directed by Nicholas Roeg. Exec.Producer George Harrison. Written by Dennis Potter. This nightmarish adaptation of Potter's play, Schmoedipus, tells the seemingly simple story of a man in search of his mother who gave up her child (a result of rape as a teenager) some 20-odd years ago. She has been left permanently scarred, trapped in a child-like limbo, drinking away her pain & pining for the child she never got to hold or love. She feels safe but desperately unhappy, in her loveless marriage to a paternalistic physician, who has infantile obsessions of his own, & spends his time locked away playing with his train-set, telling her off, working, or being disciplined by his mistress (played with considerable aplomb by Sandra Bernhardt). Enter Gary Oldman, the prodigal son, who has "come all the way across the pond in search of my mama." And suddenly, small-town USA is no longer the place of home-baked cookies & white-picket fences, but a dark, hallucinatory nightmare of repressed sexual desire, violence, revenge & madness. Welcome to the mind of the late, great Dennis Potter. This is by far one of his best works, reminiscent in many ways of Brimstone & Treacle, only honed into a more mature, polished & refined tale. It is downright disturbing & leaves one with many more questions than answers, so often the trademark of Potter's hallucinatory works. You will never hear the song "Chattanooga Choo Choo" in the same way again *****5 out of 5 stars*****

User Review - 8/10 by David JOne of George Harrison's few endeavors as a Producer through Handmade Films was this very interesting thriller, "Track 29". It's a very off-beat, but thematically tight, story of a son looking for his mother. Americana from the vantage point of Nic Roeg is very Lynchian and sexualized. It borrows its likeness from "Lolita" and "Psycho" -- but much funnier. Gary Oldman's performance was thoroughly entertaining and unsettling. His magnificent portrayal of a man-child was both manic and funny. Theresa Russell also carried her character well as this pseudo-mother/daughter. All performances around were tough to tackle, but they all did a magnificent job. What interested me most about this film was how much distance it created with its uncomfortable closeness. Instead of getting closer to these characters, Roeg creates a gap between you and the absurdity. This helps the comedic aspects all around. When it reaches its boiling point, the extravagant conclusions are found with a sly wink. "Track 29" is a macrolook into the mommy/daddy issues we all suffer at the heights of creating our own realities - be it film, music...or model train sets.
User Review - 8/10 by Juan BTrack 29 is one of those films that's approach is semi-flawed but it's ideals are so interesting and fun that the faults slowly disappear from memory. Theresa Russell stars as Linda, the depressed wife of a doctor, who we come to learn is deeply emotionally damaged because of an event in her past. The film revolves around a relationship between Linda and Martin (Gary Oldman), a stranger, who claims to be her long lost son. What starts out as a story about a loveless marriage and hints of a sort of forbidden love turns into a surreal trip about maternal obsession as Linda instantly finds a purpose again in Martin. Roeg never really states what is real or imaginary in this landscape early on, rather opting to let the viewer fall into this strange world. Gary Oldman is great as Martin, balancing this child-like exuberance with this mysterious, off-putting sense of potential danger. It's a loaded film which touches on Oedipal issues, insanity, maternity and depression. While it's not perfect by any means, its a wild, inventive film by Roeg, which never gets too overloaded in its themes thanks to it's oddness and fun tone.
