StarburstJohn HigginsTo the Devil a Daughter is a fitting tribute to a legendary horror production slate and one that fans new and old should seek out.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzThe black magic thriller is undoubtedly cheesy but, no matter, I always get a kick out of Christopher Lee and Richard Widmark, even if the latter is miscast.
Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)Ken HankeShockingly bad adaptation of the Wheatley novel.
The Observer (UK)Andrew CollinsBased on a novel by English author Dennis Wheatley, the picture makes a few too many pretensions to serious exploration of the occult, that hamper the flow.
Alternate EndingTim BraytonEven if the film before the ending had been an unmatched triumph, it would still have to contend with how deeply crass, tacky, and anti-climactic the last couple of reels are.
Chicago Sun-TimesRoger EbertThe screenplay has so many characters, and they're in so many different places, that the only way to keep them halfway straight is for them to be calling each other all the time. There are even several scenes in which the phone rings and no one's at home. No one of this Earth, anyway.
User ReviewR.John XAside from seeing Christopher Lee's naked buttocks, AGAIN this movie is great for the terrible devil puppet crawling back into Nastassja Kinski's womb. Aside from that Richard Widmark looks a bit tired as the wind blows around him. Which is not the only trick the devil has up his demonic sleeve - there are also people bursting into flames, psychic snake attacks, something about a ghostly lady, and a brush attack in the ear! The plot does not deviate too much from what the title promises, though, it is a bit anticlimactic. As far as devil baby movies go, this one is a great one. Hammer Wins Again!!
User ReviewKylie BPersonally I preferred the plot of this Wheatley adaptation to The Devil Rides Out. The high production standards mean that the special effects are less amusing - but at times there is a lack of atmosphere, meaning that the melodramatic nature of the plot/acting can feel a little silly. I rather liked the finale, though it was anti-climatic.
User ReviewOrlok WThis is a decent film, it's slow paced. It isn't very gory and no overuse of blood. The baby of the devil is ugly and could be funny due to its slightly unrealistic appearance, but it is pretty freaky still and I would not have appreciated it climbing up me. The ending was not exciting, so those who are going to see this, I would recommend not expecting too much extravagance.
User ReviewTom HDespite a troubled production and a spiteful star(Widmark) i think this is one of Hammer`s best!
