Viennese surgeon Dr. Braun and his daughter Leni come to a small town in North Dakota as refugees from Hitler. When the winds of the Dust Bowl threaten the town, John Phillips leads the townsfolk in moving to greener pastures in Oregon. | User ReviewPaul CVery average contemporary western with Wayne phoning in his usual stoic role and Coburn provides the films moral centre. Basically a propaganda film extolling America's can-do attitude and in the beginnings of it's entry in World War II. |
| User ReviewAnna NRather uninspiring and absolutely predictable 'modern western', which tried to inject shades of 'Casablanca' into the 'Grapes of Wrath' template and fails miserably. Whilst John Wayne fills his boots with competency, and Sigrid Gurie is good eye-candy, the film wants to meander along, and its quite hard to get involved with the characters because they are so one dimensional. Add a sprinkling of War propaganda into the mix and we know that all the while we are being told what to think... there is no breathing space here for the mind. |
