Movie Reviews

Chicago Sun-Times - 9/10 by Roger EbertThe movie is successful largely because [DiCaprio] is a good enough actor to hold his own in his scenes with De Niro, so that the movie remains his story, and isn't upstaged by the loathsome but colorful Dwight.
Newsweek - 9/10 by David AnsenThe beauty of This Boy's Life is in the details: this meticulously observed story gets the look of the late '50s down pat and, more important, captures the dissonance between the era's ideals of nuclear-family life and painfully deracinated reality.
The Film Yap - 9/10 by Nick RogersThe film demands ominous electricity between Dwight and Toby, the latter of whom endures various and sundry humiliation and harm at the former's hands. And there are times when DiCaprio doesn't just go toe-to-toe with De Niro but feels just as tall.
Film Freak Central - 9/10 by Bill ChambersDiCaprio goes toe-to-toe with De Niro, though his spectacular efforts here continue to be overshadowed by his Oscar-baiting in What's Eating Gilbert Grape.
The New Yorker - 9/10 by Terrence RaffertyBarkin and DiCaprio are sensational. Every time De Niro threatens to take over the picture, they snatch our attention right back, and always with something casual: a look or a gesture that conveys how thoroughly this mother and son understand each other.
Los Angeles Times - 8/10 by Kenneth TuranThe film is well-paced and expertly edited, allowing scenes to flow naturally into one another.
Movieline - 8/10 by Stephen FarberCaton-Jones has an extraordinary find in Leonardo DiCaprio, the 17-year-old newcomer who plays Toby with just the right mixture of ingenuous sweetness and simmering anger.
Washington Post - 7/10 by Rita KempleyBarkin's succulence and De Niro's showboating lend sizzle and ferocity to the proceedings, but the film draws its poignancy from 18-year-old DiCaprio's performance.
Deseret News (Salt Lake City) - 7/10 by Chris HicksThis Boy's Life is a pencil sketch that pretends to be a full-blown oil painting.
Chicago Reader - 6/10 by Jonathan RosenbaumThe leads work overtime to make their characters and their relationships pungent, believable, and moving (though with regard to the rest of the cast, the movie seems less focused and confident).
