EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyPaul Newman gives a strong performance in Vincent Sherman's glossy melodrama about a young, cynical, ambitious man, born on the wrong side of the tracks but determined to change his lot.

User ReviewConor WI like the black and white version only for some reason.
User ReviewConner RA great cast, a great story, and great direction. It's a very interesting chronicle of early 50s mentality. You get to view it in two different forms, marriage and social classes. I think it's actually one of the first times the American lifestyle was threatened or criticized. Paul Newman is amazing as always and Barbara Rush was a great co-star. It's a beautiful looking film that puts as much effort into the film making process as the story.
User ReviewPrivate UOne of the best movies I've ever seen. Great performances from all, especially a young Paul Newman. Newman's character, Anthony Lawrence, comes from a middle class background and wants to play in the "Big Leagues" of Philadelphia's elite class. Along the way, he decides to do "whatever it takes" to make it there. But, when faced with a dilemma to do "what it takes" to win a high-profile case that could destroy his best friend and bring down his family, he decides to........
User ReviewMichael LAnother amazing Newman film that captures the uncertainty of life and the social happenings of those higher up in the old Philadelphian society.
User ReviewStan DA great soap opera love story, starring Paul Newman as the young lawyer trying to make good, with Barbara Rush as his love interest. Robert Vaughn gives a memorable hammy performance as the troubled friend. With Diane Brewster, Brian Keith, Alexis Smith, John Williams, Billie Burke and Richard Deacon. Good courtroom scene at the end with a plot twist; an inspiring, entertaining and compelling story.
User Reviewjay nHighly recommended. A great movie for those always "rooting for the underdog." A good reminder to strive to be the real you and resist the social pressures to be someone you are not.
