User Review - 10/10 by Jo YOHHH YES! I HAVE TO SEE THIS AGAIN AND YOU HAVE TO SEE IT TOO!
User Review - 10/10 by Bruce BThis has all the makings of an Alfred Hitchcock Thriller, and I am told that he almost directed it. Charlton Heston and Gary Cooper combine there talents to make a truly unheard of 5 star film. My biggest surprise was that only 42 other people have review / seen this movie on Flixster. No matter what part of this Universe you are from this is a must see movie. Charlton Heston plays the part of a salvage captain. He finds the Mary Deare afloat on the open seas, right from the start when he boards her the action begins. On board he finds Gary Cooper the only man left on board the sinking vessel, which they save by beaching her on the shoals. Onboard is a mystery cargo, as Cooper believes he was left onboard to go down with the ship for insurance purposes. Though when have a somewhat young Heston, in one scene Cooper was a little old to be floundering around in the water. But this is one of the unheard of greats of old school films. Rent, Buy, Beg, But not steal a copy and sit down on a nice night, unhook the phone and enjoy. 5 stars.
User Review - 8/10 by Melissa MGreat actors and good suspense. Only a few things wrong with it (one swear word and lying, mainly). There were a few things that could have been wrapped up better at the end, perhaps. But overall, I really enjoyed it!
User Review - 8/10 by Jim WIntense movie with two solid actors giving fine performances as Captain Patch (Cooper) and John Sands (Heston). Heston is more understated, appropriately so, than in some of his other films. No overacting here. Good story based on the 1952 novel about two seamen cracking a mystery in the stormy English Channel.
User Review - 6/10 by Marty FA typical movie about honor and truth of that time... I liked cary cooper in his role and the plot was progressing slowly but steady... Heston was a bit dull/ lame acting, but still ok.
User Review - 6/10 by Mereie dâ??The Wreck of the Mary Deareâ?? (1959) by Michael Anderson, starring Gary Cooper, Charlton Heston, Richard Harris, and others. The first half hour led me to believe this would be a disaster movie with thriller aspects (what is Cooperâ??s character up to, what is he hiding - besides a body on a ship?). I am no particular fan of men running around on half-lit ships in storms with scuba diversâ?? suits (final scene), but the special effects used in these scenes were quite convincing for a late fifties movie. The story is good too (based on a novel by Hammond Innes), but the second half of the movie is problematic. The excitement of the opening scenes on the ship peters out and turns into a rather dull display of legal talk in court and a few other places. As soon as weâ??ve found out for sure who the good guys and the bad guys are, there is little left to remain in oneâ??s seat for. Apart from the final scene, that is.
User Review - 6/10 by Stuart KBased on the 1956 novel by Hammond Innes, this is a good old fashioned adventure film from director Michael Anderson, best known for The Dam Busters (1955), Around the World in Eighty Days (1956) and Logan's Run (1976). It does sag a little bit in the middle with the courtroom action, but it's enjoyable while it lasts. It begins in the English Channel, and has rescue boat captain John Sands (Charlton Heston) discovering a freighter called the Mary Deare drifting around, there's been a fire on board, the ship seems deserted, and Sands thinks he will get a big salvage fee for finding this ship, but then he discovers First Officer Gerald Patch (Gary Cooper) on board. Back on dry land, the matter of why the Mary Deare was abandoned is taken to court, and nothing is what it seems, why did the crew abandon ship?? Why was Patch still on board?? Was he hiding something?? The ship had just come back from Rangoon, but not with the cargo it seems to have claimed it had. It is the sort of adventure film you don't get anymore, the seabound sequences are well done indeed, but it's a pity it slows down back on dry land. To think that Alfred Hitchcock was asked to do this, but he couldn't make it work the way he wanted it to, so he did North By Northwest (1959) instead.
User Review - 6/10 by Sylvester EA true classic that's worth adding to your collection.
User Review - 4/10 by Gene I BIt moves a little slow, but it's a good movie.
