Kayelitsha, South-Africa, today. 2003 A township, close to Cape-town, after the end of Apartheid. Two kids, 14, Madiba and Sipho play along the railway. A train passes by. A dead man rolls to their feet. On him, they find a gun and a video camera. Sipho takes the gun and Madiba the camera. Their destiny is sealed. Benny, their friend makes a wooden camera and Madiba hides the video inside, in order to avoid embarrassing questions, racketing etc. He starts filming the township and its inhabitants. He discovers the strange beauty of his life's setting. Sipho, the boss, brings his friends to Cape-town, the white city, so close, so far, so exotic to the eyes of the children. While Sipho forms a gang with the street children and makes all kinds of illicit trading, Madiba films the town, its huge buildings, its business life, and its luxury. In a bookstore, he films a young white girl, stealing a book. They look at each other. Going out of the store, she drops book on road, knowing he will pick it up. In it she has written a message. Estelle belongs to a traditional Cape-townian white family. Her father is a famous doctor. Comfortable life. Prejudices not really questioned by the change of regime. Estelle is dying to breathe the air of the new times. Her family doesn't allow her to do so. She rebels, between a few lessons of music given by Mr. Shawn, an old humanist who makes no difference between Blacks and Whites. He teaches in townships and has done so since the days of Apartheid. Estelle thinks of Madiba, this funny boy, with his strange camera and his apparent sensibility. Sipho who is now addicted to glue as much as to street trafficking, becomes the chief of his small gang. Madiba films incessantly. He dreams also of this young white girl who has held out her hand to him. They meet again some days later, and slowly a strong friendship starts between them. From the first steps of a young cinematographer who changes the perception of his township to the tragic end of Sipho, the good-hearted bad boy, THE WOODEN CAMERA tells the story of a friendship between two kids, not understood by their parents who refuse what seems to them like a compromise with the enemy. It will take all the determination of the kids and the intelligence of Mr. Shawn, who knows that music has no colour, to give a chance to the impossible.

User Review - 10/10 by Muhammed ÖMannn, this is my favorite movie, the actours have done a great job
User Review - 8/10 by Thomas NWell, I guess I better explain how I came across this first. I was searching the internet looking for a film made in Africa, and after about an hour of searching I found this... The Wooden Camera. It sounded interesting enough, so I Netflix-ed it. I watched it and was thuroughly impressed. Prior to watching it I thought it was going to be a garbage movie that stayed "hidden" because of how bad it was... God, I was wrong. Not only was the story engulfing and kept my interest, the cinematography was masterful. Let alone the cinmetography, the acting was quite good. I was surprised because most of the kids who played in it had not done a feature before this, leaving me to believe it wouldn't be that good seeing as how there was no real experience behind it... Once again I was wrong. This film also houses the talent of the one and only Jean-Pierre Cassel, probably most famous for his role in Luis Buñuel's The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. Seeing a veteran actor of his calibur mixed with the acting of these young, first feature stars was a great and enjoyable experience. To sum it up, this film is an excellent film, and a great "hidden gem". I do wish more people would see it though, so I have someone to discuss it with. *Sigh*
User Review - 8/10 by Private Uvery intresting. always love those up and coming south african films
User Review - 8/10 by Eve TInteresting movie. Occasionally cute, occasionally sad. It follows two boys and a girl around, to backdrop of modernizing and still more or less openly racist and discriminating society. We get to see friendship growing between kids from different backgrounds, consequences of some of their choices, different life and opportunities for people from different backgrounds, etc. It is refreshing to see a movie about South Africa that is for once not from tourist/safari point of view, but instead shows a more realistic side of life for both poor and rich, privileged and discriminated people there. About synopsis: Hmm... didn't know that telling synopsis would include telling the full story including the end. People who haven't seen this movie must be thankful for it.;) Making difference between "black" and "white" is part of racism as well. Yes, lot of people do it, but does it make it more "right", or less racism?
User Review - 6/10 by Lee MPredictable. Such a shame really but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad film. Just not surprising. Actually it entertained me enough to watch the whole thing and I have to admit I wasn't completely sure how it would turn out. I think that was mainly because I didn't expect them to do what they did, seeing as the characters were so young. The acting however was on the mediocre side although Junior Singo (Madiba) was adorable so I guess that made up for the very annoying and bad acting from Dana de Agrella (Estelle). I do feel that this movie could have gone in a different direction and possibly a better one (a less predictable one anyway) but like I mentioned before. That doesn't necessarily make it a bad film. I should also add that just because this movie is South African doesn't mean it's not in English. So basically there are no subtitles to read for all the anti subtitle viewers
User Review - 4/10 by Grant SHad great potential, but was very disappointing in the end. The basic premise and vibe of the movie was great, and the movie oozed charm throughout. Cinematography was excellent. However, the plot fell apart pretty quickly, and turned into a random, contrived, far-fetched, inconsistent, badly-paced mess. The acting was also pretty amateurish. I really wanted to like this movie, due to its heart being in the right place, but the plot, especially, and acting let it down.
User Review - 2/10 by Ivan LComo una imitación ?de ciudad de dios?, pero con algo que molesta, no se si sea la cursilería o lo forzado de la historia o las malas actuaciones. Me chocó.
