Movie Reviews

RogerEbert.com - 6/10 by Simon AbramsI’m not sure where this particular wannabe franchise is going or if anybody but initiated viewers will care to find out, but I could watch another one.
Movie Nation - 5/10 by Roger MooreOnce it finally gets going, The Witch: Part 2, the Other One is impressive. But there’s nothing here that transcends the genre, and what is here is a simple, slow-moving witch-hunt story whose clutter keeps it from ever truly getting up to speed.
User Review - 5/10 by JLuis_001The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion was an unexpected surprise. It certainly wasn't breaking any new ground, but it was more fun than I initially expected. At first that title teased a sequel, but now it turns out that it's going to be a trilogy, so needless to say The Witch: Part 2. The Other One leaves its entire plot open-ended, which is somewhat problematic considering the route taken by this story. This is because it turns out that the leading role in this story is not the same one from the previous film. That character was performed by Kim Da-mi, who only makes a small appearance at the end of this film. So starting from there, we got a new girl. A new witch, hence The Other One of the title. The problem is that her journey barely makes any sense at first. The editing is dreadful in the first hour and it's really hard to understand what's going on. When you get to the final act and its conclusion, the story does end up making sense, but the way the film moves forward and keeps you entertained to get you to that point is based purely on the action sequences, which are still far-fetched, but they get the job done. As is often the case with the film that falls in the middle of a trilogy, the job of its narrative is to expand the context and the world its characters inhabit and this story focuses on that, albeit not very clearly and not at all subtly. It is what it is. Wasn't expecting much in that regard though. All I've gotta say is that if you liked the first, you'll enjoy this one too, but I did find it less enjoyable. It's still entertaining because the formula remains the same, but for that reason the trick has already been seen.
