Classic Film and TelevisionMichael E. GrostOdd bur rich mix of the visionary, comedy and the darkest side of gangsters.
User ReviewJames CEdward G. Robinson was a great actor. I saw this movie last night. The movie is absorbing and entertaining; and Mr. Robinson demonstrated his skills with such dexterity that his acting is a breath of fresh air.
User ReviewChristopher JAn unlikely John Ford movie. Twice the Edward G. Robinson and a career making performance from Jean Arthur make it a must-see for me.
User ReviewChris .Weird enough John Ford doing a straight Comedy but even weirder is how good it is. Edward G. Robinson plays dual roles as a ordinary working guy gets confused for a homicidal gangster plus you get Jean Arthur's voice which is strangely growing on me the more of her movies I see.
User ReviewMaria VMy favourite comedienne with one of the greatest gangster tough-guys of all time. Edward G Robinson proves his mettle as a funnyman playing the meek Arthur Ferguson Jones, a clerk who gets mistaken for a bloodthirsty gangster. A delightful mistaken identity screwball comedy with hilarious performances from the two leads. God bless Jean Arthur!
User ReviewW. David LEdward G. and Edward G. are both great. The doubling effects? Well, I saw this the same year that ILM did doubling effects for Big Business (Lilly Tomlin & Bette Midler), and it blew that out of the water.
User ReviewAj VI saw this on TV, it was such a great movie, I'm glad they only had one or two commercial breaks. Robinson and Arthur are fantastic in this movie. It's funny and exciting. I highly recommend it.
User ReviewJames HEdward G. Robinson is such a brilliant actor, and he shines in this gem. A wonderful classic that expertly balances comedy and drama, great story and very entertaining.
User ReviewDoctor Sthis is a two-fer u get good eddie g and u get evil eddie g all in one pic!
User ReviewAnne FThe set up is wonderful, like something out of a Shakespeare comedy. Unfortunately the film only focuses on one of the two identical men. It makes the confusion more frustrating than funny. Robinson is excellent in both roles and Jean Arthur is fantastic as one down right sassy broad. The direction seems rather off at times. There's no tension between Jones and Mannion and some scenes stay focussed on a particular character when they should really cut away for a reaction shot. I know this isn't a typical Ford film and it shows. The ridiculous circumstances under which Jones achieves fame are still relevant today and show that he has to actually accomplish something to be a real hero.
