Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 6/10 by Dennis SchwartzSilly Sword-and-Sandal costume pic that takes itself so seriously.
User Review - 10/10 by Pavandeep SThe first Hammer film I've watched, absolutely loved it, can still recall much of the scenes, just loved the entirety of the film, the senselessnes of the fightings, to just adore this strange film, that doesn't quite make total sense, but is still brilliant.
User Review - 8/10 by L JThe Druids were right!! This film is actually a lot better than it sounds. Don Chaffey, director of One Million Years BC, made this historical drama for Hammer, which is loosely based on the reign of Queen Boadicea. It's no masterpiece, but it looks great (filmed on location in Ireland) and has strong performances from Don Murray, the great Andrew Keir and ever-dependable Patrick Troughton (who must've been about to succeed William Hartnell in the role of Doctor Who, around the time of this film's release). Unfortunately, this is one of those Hammer films where the female lead is given to a non-actress (this time Finnish model Carita Jarvinen) whose ability to look good onscreen outweighs her acting ability (and the fact that her voice has been completely re-dubbed doesn't help, either). Also featuring a young Nicola Pagett and Donald Houston as Maelgan the Druid Priest (in a very ...'theatrical' performance!). In spite of any shortcomings, this is a damn good effort. Trust me.
User Review - 8/10 by Tom H"This is not the dream we made, my darling." - The Viking Queen King Priam lay on his death bed. He chooses a successor out of his three daughters. He picks Salina. She is to take on the task as The Viking Queen like her mother before her and form an alliance with the Roman's so there may be peace among their tribe. The Roman leader, Justinian, falls in love with Salina. She too feels the same way despite both having to be allies. While hunting for boar in their chariots, they veer off course. Salina going faster than Justinian turning this so called hunting trip into a chariot race which ends with Justinian jumping into Salina's chariot only to make it tip into a river where they both get wet and intimate. This physical aspect transcends into love. They speak of marriage, but it doesn't happen since a foreshadowing druid named Maelgan speaks of a prophecy written in the sky by Zeus himself. He will not marry them based on what he sees. Justinian's right hand man Octavian is bewildered himself by his compromise to the people of this tribe especially, in one particular scene, he begins to give away tax breaks to those who need it. When one man, Osiris, isn't treated fairly because he's rich enough he has to pay more taxes based on that alone which pisses Osiris off and begins to plot against Justinian with help from Octavian. Octavian begins hating Justinian and when Osiris's plot to send Justinian away makes him just the more glad he still wishes that he'd stay gone forever! With Justinian sent to fight a battle in Anglesey, Octavian begins to wreak havoc. His men savagely drag Salina out into the public, ripping her clothes off and whipping her in front of the people who begin an uprising against the Roman's. It doesn't work. From Salina's body whipped to a bloody pulp to her sister Talia raped by Octavian to finally the burning of their tribe, The Viking Queen seeks revenge! DEATH TO THE ROMANS! She begins to take up the sword to fulfill the prophecy that she was meant to do, Kick the Roman's ass. The film reaches an interesting dilemma for Selina to decide if love is more powerful than prophecy for which is constantly trying to test her. Justinian and Selina are stuck with responsibility for their own duties, he being a roman and she being a queen to her people, their love can not be and that is evident when they both come face to face in the final battle between roman and druid. It doesn't end happily. This was an interesting film. I liked how it didn't wrap everything up in an embrace between Salina and Justinian. Their love is really not to be. Carita, who plays The Viking Queen, is so beautiful. She only made two films. This was her last, not because she died or anything, but because she didn't like acting and wanted to continue modeling. Overall, a slightly romantic tale of two people who are meant to be, but not in this life time. Perhaps in another time they'd be perfect for each other.
User Review - 8/10 by Peter CNever mind the historical inaccuracies and risible dialogue. Four stars for the lovely Irish countryside and for some very fetching lady stars! It's getting a screening at the 2009 JORVIK Viking Festival in York too!
User Review - 6/10 by David AMid-budget Hammer movie - entertaining particularly when the Romans with their enormous weapons go up against the druids with their fertility sticks - it can only go one way!
User Review - 6/10 by Richard BAs much a love story as a Britons v Romans war film - and it is not bad. However, the film-makers certainly milk the obvious sex appeal of Carita and the actresses who play the slave girls.
User Review - 6/10 by Jeremy NAn enjoyable historical romp from Hammer Studios.
User Review - 4/10 by Michael TLook hard & you can spot a viking wearing a wristwatch...'nuff said.
User Review - 4/10 by Luke HThey say never let the truth get in the way of telling a good story. Perhaps with The Viking Queen, some truth ought to have been thrust in the way of this story, least then it may have been more exciting. The film is not based on any actual historical events, just loosely, or shall we say "inspired" by history. Problem is, the fiction concocted by the writers isn't compelling enough to justify the abandonment of history. That said, the movie is watchable as a swords and sandals type soap opera romp. Certainly looks impressive, given its limited budget. It has some good sets, costumes and the photography was quite nice. A couple of trivia notes: This film was One-and-Done for its star Carita, a Finnish model, who, it seems, wasn't much impressed with the glamor of filmmaking and went straight back to modeling afterwards, never to return. Also, there's supposedly a famous goof in this film: an extra, dressed as a Roman soldier, is seen wearing a wristwatch! However, after just watching the movie and looking out for this goof, I couldn't spot it anywhere. So I suspect this could be a myth itself, created to add an aura of infamy to this otherwise forgotten film. As they say, Never let the truth get in the way of telling a good story, eh?
