Biff Grimes is pugnacious but likable young man during the Gay 90's living with his ne'er-do-well father, noted for their scrappy personalities and quick tempers. Like every other young man in town, Biff has a crush on gorgeous and flirtatious 'strawberry blonde' Virginia Brush, who gets catcalls every time she walks past the all-male clientele of the neighborhood barber shop. Biff is joined in his admiration by his friends, Nick Pappalis, an immigrant Greek barber, and Hugo Barnsfeld, an unscrupulously ambitious young man who doesn't let anything stand in the way of what he wants, including Virginia. Utilizing both fair means and foul Hugo sweeps Virginia off her feet and frames Biff as the fall guy in a political graft scheme. However, every dog has his day, and, eight years later, Biff stands poised to take his revenge.

Chicago ReaderDon DrukerA delicious bit of Americana (1941) by Raoul Walsh, capturing superbly the 1890s ambience of Walsh’s own early years.
The New York TimesBosley CrowtherIts amiable, infectious quality lies in the seriocomic way it re-creates the Eighteen Nineties culture of New York — horse-and-buggy courtships, dancing at beer gardens, Sunday afternoon street music and maybe an occasional brawl.
Portland OregonianTed MaharCagney and de Havilland provide topnotch performances that do much to keep up interest in the proceedings. Rita Hayworth is an eyeful as the title character, while Jack Carson is excellent as the politically ambitious antagonist of the dentist.
User ReviewEric RThe Strawberry Blonde is an enjoyable film. It is about a guy who falls in love with a girl but his best friend marries her first. James Cagney, Rita Hayworth and Olivia de Havilland give excellent performances. The screenplay is well written and funny. Raoul Walsh did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the comedy and romance. The Strawberry Blonde is a must see.
User ReviewBruce BThe "bad guy" gets his comeuppance in a very natural seeming way. This is Jimmy Cagney playing way against type. De Haviland and Hayworth play pretty much to type in smallish roles. Alan Hale plays the genial bad guy. This would be film noir before the definition was created.
User ReviewDes MTwo of the most beautiful ladies in the history of hollywood DeHavilland steals the show.
User ReviewJen POh how I love this film! Biff Grimes played by Cagney is so charmiing in a rough kind of way. Don't miss this one!
