Full Plot Details

Arthur Williams and his young wife were extremely happy in their beautiful home. One day Arthur returned home with a beautiful ring, for which his wife had expressed a wish. That day she attended a bridge-whist party. She was unsuccessful in playing and lost all her money. She conceived the daring scheme of stealing home and taking a large amount of money from a vault, where Arthur was accustomed to keep his surplus cash. Still bad luck pursued her. Finally Jack Read offered to loan her a large amount. Mary refused to take it, but finally yielded on condition that he would accept as security the ring. The next day, Arthur at his club overheard Jack mention his wife's name, and showing the ring, Arthur demanded an explanation. Jack refused to give it. Then he returned home. He told his wife of the occurrence at the club, and asked her what it meant. Mary admitted that she had given Jack the ring. Fearing that his wife was not true to him, Arthur left the house. Then Mary determined to quickly clear up the whole affair. Taking with her a small revolver, she went to Jack's apartments. She demanded the ring. Jack laughed. Being in a humorous mood, he suggested that they cut the cards to determine whether she should take the ring or whether he should take her. Mary agreed, reserving in her own mind an escape that he should win. Jack cut first, a king. Mary picked up the cards and drew an ace. Catching up the precious ring, she hurried home, where she quickly explained to her husband the whole affair.
