User ReviewHerbert CThumbs up to the details considered in this simplistic film but the element of "thriller" suspense was somewhat mild.
User ReviewJohnson CA movie of imagination, also for you to imagine.
User ReviewHaowei CThe story of the Chinese Secret Service (701) at the time of the people's revolution against the Nationalists. More action than Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy but certainly no Bourne Identity.
User ReviewAdriano Bhas lots of potential from the get-go but midway thanks to direction or lack of storytelling, story was all over the place and doesn't make sense especially towards the guess-who mystery. Tony Leung is in his usual acting style. The ending could have been very different and shocking, every possible angle was going thru my head especially during the last funeral sequence, but it was the usual ho-hum given.
User Reviewk lIt's a strange thing to say but some directors just don't get better, and I say this not in the strictly artistic sense but in a much more personal sense. A film director sees a mistake in his film, and corrects it, just as a cook would vary his ingredients according to his every last tasting. Not that every film should be better than the last - making film is after all not like making dvd players - but the obvious mistakes, the cheap effects, the cheesy slow-motion turn of the head, the male and female leads' departure scenes that look like AXE commercials, what are they doing again and again and again in Alan Mak's films? Just how many more movies does he have to make to realize that they're simply bunch of worthless gimmicks, and that he is not Wong Kar-Wai even if he uses Wong's shots and music. The ending scene was an attempt at recreating the complex juxtaposition at the end of the first Godfather film. But while the irony in the Godfather is that Coleone's soldiers kill the heads of the New York mafia families, he is in the church swearing to God to renounce Satan. What is it doing in this film? Nothing. Just for the hell of it. Well, that's fine too, if you do it well. And they blew it.
User ReviewDennis LNot good, not bad, just so so. The movie worse than the TV series, it just felt like missing something.
User ReviewJY SFelix Chong and Alex Mak manage to conjure up a good dramatic thriller with The Silent War.It takes nearly 2 hours to get through the story and it does feel as long as that. That isn't to say that the film is a complete bore, because it isn't. Sure, the pacing is a bit on the slow side and there isn't much in the way of tensile moments, but the plot elements and story concept are enough to hold interest.Although taking place during a war and revolving around spies, the action and violence is slim to none. This isn't surprising considering the characters, and even the title. Both Tony Leung and Zhou Xun are the biggest praises of this film. Watching a blind Tony Leung is intriguing and Zhou Xun delivers a sharp performance for her character as well.At the end of the day, the cast and setting for The Silent War is engaging enough to make it a worthwhile viewing.
User ReviewMandy CIt's a complex feeling after watching this movie. Even more when complicated when such a heavy and serious movie incorporated with Tony's witty and semi-funny acts. I really want to like this movie a lot, but really... putting the "tokyo raiders" charisma to this show proves it doesn't work. What's more is when the story is pretty predictable to some point it doesn't make sense. But nevertheless, the setting for the movie is nicely captured... and comes with accompanying music, and of course credit given to those who did a perfect job developing tony's character. Conclusion, worth watching on a boring weekend when you have nothing to watch.
