New York TimesVincent CanbyA long, beautifully modulated cry of despair.
Apollo GuideBrian WebsterOne of those movies where you know they're trying to say something important, but it's just not coming across.
Chicago Sun-TimesRoger EbertAstonishing things happen and symbolism can only work by being apparent. For me, the film is like music or a landscape: It clears a space in my mind, and in that space I can consider questions. (Review of Original Release)
Chicago ReaderJonathan RosenbaumThe conceit gets a little out of hand after one of the angels falls in love with the trapeze artist and decides to become human; but prior to this, Wings of Desire is one of Wenders's most stunning achievements.

Washington PostHal Hinson[A] frustrating, monotonously obscure movie.
User ReviewPatricia JNow I loved this film. A dramatic love story. Debra Winger and John Malkovich are both just superb in this intriguing film. Photography magnificent.
User ReviewTytus WThis is dying for love as no other film has presented.
User ReviewCatia YWe must be strong and hold on to our heart and courage if we want to face the empty vacuum of our existence. A journey that inevitably unveils the defeat of our stubborn sake of meaning.
User ReviewDarwin FA masterpiece at almost every level. Mark Peploe's adaptation perfectly plots this complex narrative of an American couple losing their way in the Sahara (and makes highly original use of Paul Bowles as narrator). Bertolucci's precise control of mise-en-scene and Vittoro Storaro's beautiful cinematography add depth to the fine performances of Debra Winger and John Malkovich in the lead roles. (Timothy Spall also makes short, but memorable appearances throughout). I highly recommend it.
