Full Plot Details

Buddy, Barilli, Mingo and Ansel, detectives with the NYPD, comprise a secret investigative unit called the Seven-Ups, who, largely undercover, focus on cases leading to felony convictions with prison sentences of seven years or more for the criminals in question. Many within the NYPD who know about the unit don't support the idea of it because of the often unethical way they work on the cases, but their superior, Inspector Gilson, defends the unit solely because of the results. On the sly, Buddy, who is the head of the team, gets much of the information for the cases from Vito Lucia, a childhood friend who still lives and works in the old neighborhood where much of the crime is based. Vito knows that his life could be in danger if the mob finds out that he acts as a snitch for the police. After Buddy starts looking into the loan sharking business of some local mob members, unknown to him some of those mob members are shaken down for a minimum $100,000 apiece, one by one kidnapped for ransom before they are released when the extortionists are able to abscond with the ransom money. The M.O. of the extortionists is for two to act as police detectives bringing the mob member in for questioning, before showing their true colors of kidnapping the person for ransom. The mob has no reason to doubt that the men truly are NYPD gone bad. Buddy even sees one of them taken in, a bail bondsman named Festa with mob ties, he knowing that what he witnessed was not what it appeared on the surface, however unaware that this situation was not a one off in the scuttlebutt he had previous heard about general unrest on the streets. By the time that Buddy learns of the serial kidnappings and the unofficial war the mob has with the NYPD because of it, Buddy and the team are determined to nab the mastermind behind the extortions as it has become more than a professional issue for them.

Movie Reviews

Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 9/10 by Dennis SchwartzThe plot is skimpy, but the action is generous.
Cinapse - 7/10 by Ed TravisFans of gritty 1970s New York City crime cinema (and who isn't, really?), should absolutely seek out The Seven-Ups, both as a fascinating piece of a larger crime cinema tapestry, and as a thrilling action film in its own right.
User Review - 10/10 by Jayson QTHEY JUST DONT MAKE FILMS LIKE THIS ANY MORE.
User Review - 10/10 by Naomi GAn underlooked at film that is one of the best movies produced in the '70's. Roy Scheider is a member of an elite police task force in New York City, whose anti mob objective becomes complicated by now needing to protect the mob bosses from some officers in Scheider's own department.. A more popular movie is the earlier The French Connection, but The Seven-Ups is unhindered by Hackman's lack of acting ability and the earlier movie's intensely boring and nonsensical plot. The gritty realism of urban crime in The Seven-Ups is unparalleled. And it contains the best car chase Hollywood has ever made, much better than the boring Bullit chase or Hackman's attempts in The French Connection. That is if you like a realistic car chase and not one that seems more suited for Star Wars.
User Review - 10/10 by Curtis RRoy Scheider was the man back in the 70's and starred or appeared in some real blockbusters. Here he gets a starring vehicle as Buddy, leader of an elite squad of undercover New York cops called the "7UP's" referring to the fact that they use any means necessary to put criminals away for no less than seven years. When a childhood friend and informant for Buddy turns traitor and it leads to one of the squadmember's deaths, its up to Buddy to bring down the bad guys his own way. One of the greatest car chases caught on screen from the mastermind behind "Bullit' and "French Connection".
User Review - 10/10 by Scott RA first on this Christmas Eve, if you like Bullitt you'll love this production. Produced and directed by Philip D'Antoni. (1973)
User Review - 10/10 by Craig MThe best car chase of all time!!! Roy Scheider in the most rockin of Bad Ass cop movies! The best of the triple threat car chase flics!
User Review - 10/10 by Mark RLow-key cop movie directed by "The French Connection"/"Bullit" producer Philip D'Antoni. "The Seven-Ups" was his first and only movie as a director. It's a shame because it's a great little movie. The dialogue is sparse, the cinematography is outstanding, the score is edgy and the violence is realistic and gritty. They just don't make movies like this anymore.
User Review - 10/10 by Matt SWhile Bullitt and The French Connection have great car chases/scenes, this movie has the best one ever made, hands down. Normal cars (for that time,) more realistic setting, shocker at the end, it's priceless. It's got a lot of recycled bits from Bullitt, but the same guys made it. Bill Hickman driving the big Pontiac also drove the Charger in Bullitt.
User Review - 8/10 by Kevin HThe Seven-Ups is an underrated crime thriller which remains unseen by many yet features not only a fantastic shootout at the end but quite possibly the greatest car chase ever filmed. Scheider is excellent here as the lead, growing from his supporting role in The French Connection and really holding his own. The above mentioned car chase has to be seen to be believed as it is just fantastic. This film still holds up well to this day which is a testament to the talent involved.
