THE SERGEANT is the story of the dark inner struggle of Master Sergeant Albert Callan to overcome the overwhelming attraction he feels for one of his charges. In the staid and stifling environment of a post-World War II army post in France, Callan's deeply repressed attraction to other men surfaces when he encounters handsome Private Swanson. Maintaining the rugged "man's man" image of a war hero, Callan barks orders to his underlings. Later, lonely in his solitude, he recalls the frightening experiences of war and the events that led to this crossroads. Filled with self-loathing and unable to act on the natural attraction he feels for Swanson, Callan's affection festers into antagonism. He pushes Swanson constantly with verbal assaults and undeserved punishments. Oblivious to Callan's attraction to him, Swanson comes finally to feel enmity for his Master Sergeant.

User Review - 8/10 by Salea BI admit whoever served in an army (as I did) might feel more compassion to it. Rod Steiger does a great job in the film making me feel a little heart broken that he was reduced to appear in some bad scripts later in his life. There are a number of awkward scenes and bad camera shots, some of them made me lose feel for the scene. Some of the scenes in the beginning felt a little harassing towards Private Swanson making it a bit obvious what was going on. In all the movie is great and definitely worth seeing
User Review - 8/10 by jesse kThis movie caught my adolescent imagination on British TV late one night when I was about 14 years old. As a keen film-buff many years later, I've tried to seek it out time and time again but never knew the actor, director or even the title of the film before today. It's taken years to find a clip on YouTube, but the full movie is there in eleven parts and that's where I've just watched it again. Another superb performance from Rod Steiger of course, but this time as the lovelorn Master Sergeant Albert Callan, obsessed with one of his men. The inevitably tragic ending is typical of its time, but seems much more like a modern documentary drama against a "Don't ask, don't tell" policy in the army than Hollywood fiction over forty years old. Still hard to find on DVD or for sale anywhere on the net, the silent opening sequence alone with its mournful jazz score and blend of B&W and colour footage is still masterly cinematography/storytelling as good now as it was back then. You've just got to love the Internet!
User Review - 4/10 by Roger RThe subject matter must have been pretty daring for its time, and it would seem to provide a lot of opportunities for great drama, but this film falls flat. Slow-paced and surprisingly bland, even another exceptional performance by Rod Steiger couldn't inject enough energy to keep it compelling.
