While attending a conference in Quebec City, Sherlock Holmes and his good friend, Dr. Watson, are drawn into a murder investigation in the nearby village of La Mort Rouge. Holmes had received a letter from Lady Penrose asking for his assistance as she feared for her life. It was too late, however, as she had already been killed by the time he received it. Her throat was torn out and the local villagers are spreading rumors about monsters and evil spirits as being the cause. Holmes doesn't believe any of that and sets out to find the killer. He believes that Lady Penrose's past as an actress may have something to with her death. As others in the village are attacked, Holmes believes the killer is among them, impersonating a local villager as he goes about his business.

User Review - 10/10 by Martin AThis really is a top notch horror, creepy and with a great cast and story. Holmes must find who killed the actress and why? Total classic
User Review - 10/10 by Nate TThis has to be one of the best films in the series. Rich atmosphere, deft direction and acting... On Blu-Ray.
User Review - 10/10 by Brad GThe Rathbone & Bruce partnership was like a well-oiled machine by the time they made this film, and in it's quieter moments one can almost hear purring. The story takes elements of "The Hound of the Baskervilles" and spins a tremendous seemingly supernatural yarn which Holmes is in on from the start. It turns out that a psychopathic actor with a talent for mimicry has been slitting throats (with a five-pronged garden weeder), not them "ghosts and monsters" whom the people of La Morte Rouge fear so much. The scene where a luminous spectre flits across the marshes is genuinely creepy. Great photography and lighting throughout. Nigel Bruce as Watson provides excellent light relief, falling into a bog (twice) and failing spectacularly in his mission to be inconspicuous in the local pub - by the end of the evening he is totally off his face and the centre of attention. Also there is a nice cameo from Victoria Horne, whose finest hour was playing Elwood P Dowd's sister Myrtle Mae in one of my favouritest films "Harvey". One thing about this film does puzzle me though: how has a Glaswegian ended up as a police sergeant in Quebec?!
User Review - 10/10 by Tim TThe best of the Universal Holmes films. Tons of fog and atmosphere, with several creepy scenes. Highly Recommended.
User Review - 10/10 by Stephanie WThe best of all the Rathbone/Bruce Holmes films even if telly execs insist on showing Hounds every fortnight, but when the fuck did they ever know anything? Guy Ritchie can kiss my balls.
User Review - 10/10 by Bill Tgreat atmosphere wish watson was the sleuth though
User Review - 10/10 by Luke BLove this installment of the Sherlock Holmes with Rathbone and Bruce. The story is great and you have no idea where the twists and turns are going to take you! I love it when disguises are involved in the Holmes movies because they really do a great job with them. Maybe it's just the black and white but I can almost never tell it's the same person! This is to me the darkest and saddest of the Holmes films I've seen. There are more deaths than most and the sad aspect of the daughter of the inn keeper being murdered and him getting revenge. This was also a better developed plot than most others. All in all it was one of my favorites! :)
User Review - 8/10 by Anthony VGreat atmosphere in one of the better Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films.
User Review - 8/10 by Nicolas MAhah, Sherlock est de retour pour pourfendre un "monstre" et la legende qui l'entoure. Le fin mot de l'histoire est des plus interessants.
User Review - 8/10 by Steve GGreat atmosphere in one of the better Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films.
