User Review - 10/10 by Mike MThis was a good film, but I had to stop it before the end and I knew it was going to get tragic. If you like watching movies that make you like the characters then watch something bad happen, then watch this movie. It was very well acted and a very good film, but I thought the exact same way about requiem for a dream.......So I did watch the end and thankfully I was able to add this to the end of my review. Revised. Ok I couldn't help myself, I watched the end. It has a great ending so now 5 stars. And I am a picky movie guy. This is a good one for the whole family too! Actress Phoebe Nicholls looks a lot like Victoria Stilwell the dog trainer
User Review - 10/10 by Phyllis CThe Scapegoat is a wonderful film, beautifully shot with solid direction and excellent performances throughout. Loosely based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier, one reviewer said he had to stop watching because he knew the ending would be tragic. I know exactly how he felt; du Maurier often wrote dark novels with rather tragic endings that would not always translate well into a movie format. In the film, Rebecca, the plot got the "Hollywood" treatment which cleaned up the ending a bit: in the book, although goaded, Maxim really does intentionally kill his wife; it isn't an accident like in the movie version. With Scapegoat, I am grateful I stuck with it to the end, because the ending was very rewarding, not a tragedy as he predicted. Although his comment was erroneous, it is a testament to the power of the film; the characters are so convincing, our lead is so sympathetic, that to have disaster fall at the end would have been a huge disappointment. (I don't always require a happy ending to find a movie worthwhile; but in this case, it was a great improvement to the novel's plot and increased my enjoyment of the film immensely.) I am also pleased that they were able take a rather worn out premise and make it fresh again-the 'trading places' theme as been done so many times that it would have been easy to drop the ball on this one. Instead, we get a reasonably believable approach--or perhaps the performances are so strong and the direction so solid that we find it easy to suspend reality and just "go with it." If you love romantic stories, you will surely love this tale.
User Review - 10/10 by Lisa FThis was a brilliantly executed doppleganger film. The characters unfolded themselves with perfect timing, and the suspense kept me on the edge of my seat by the end. This film is not to be missed!
User Review - 10/10 by Susan JExcellent acting and great story - entertaining for sure and will make you think a bit about your own relations with people around you.
User Review - 10/10 by MagnoliaSouth XThis film is based on a book by Daphne Du Maurier, the author who wrote the book that Alfred Hitchcock based Rebecca on. This one has a little humor, some inspiration to do better in this life of ours as well as suspense. Matthew Rhys gave a powerful performance in this film. He is truly an actor that is multi-dimensional and he can play kind and gentle and downright evil. He was the perfect actor for this job. There are a lot of secrets that our evil main character keeps and as you peel back each layer our good main character rises to the challenge. I absolutely adored this film but for two minor details. The stereo-typical gay love triangle that I'm fairly certain was not in the book and that Andrew Scott was not better utilized. I mean, that man is a rock star when he's on screen (see Sherlock "The Final Problem" and watch this man get off the helicopter). All the characters were very well defined and special kudos to Phoebe Nicholls. Her Charlotte character was absolutely what you would expect: the no non-sense, seldom surprised but all knowing nurse/housekeeper. This is truly not to be missed.
User Review - 8/10 by Zola SLoved this adaptation of the Daphne Du Maurier film and I thought Matthew Rhys aced the dual roles beautifully. His name in the cast is why I selected this film as I was familiar with his role on the TV series "Brothers & Sisters". Very entertaining and well directed.
User Review - 8/10 by Ryan SI didn't expect much from this film but it surprised me. I came to really care for the people in this family. I rooted for them all for the bad deal they had been dealt. Meeting evil incarnate was unsettling and real.
User Review - 8/10 by Teresa OBig surprise. Somehow this film came up as a suggestion for me on netflix. Totally enjoyed it though never heard of it before. Just really well wrought for what it is and was really sorry that it ended.
User Review - 8/10 by Jade CIt was pretty cool - especially the climax of where nobody really understood who was who anymore ! If I'd realised who Andrew Scott was at the time , I wouldn't have been able to stop watching it - but I did because it was a little bit too long
User Review - 8/10 by Anh HGreat cast; acting; direction. Music. Costume and set design. All-around treat.
