Scott Calvin is disgusted to learn that his ex-wife and her husband have tried - and failed - to break it easy to their 6-year-old son Charlie that Santa isn't real. On Christmas Eve, Scott reads The Night Before Christmas - then receives an unexpected visitor on his roof. When Santa is startled by Scott's calling out and falls, he disappears, leaving only an 8-reindeer sleigh and a suit with instructions to put it on if he's involved in an accident. Scott does, and is transported around the town dropping gifts through chimneys until he's taken to the North Pole and informed by a group, who claim they're elves, that he is now Santa. Charlie is proud of his dad's new job, though Scott's convinced it's a dream. Until his hair turns white, his beard refuses to stay shaved, he gains weight inexplicably, even for his sudden love of junk food - Now he's accepted it, there's just one problem: how to keep it secret from his disbelieving family.
Leave your thoughts about The Santa Clause.
VarietyLeonard KladyThis is a hip, likable spin on the seasonal icon told with a deft mixture of comedy and sentimentality.
Film InquiryZac HestandThe Santa Clause is a failure as a holiday movie. It promotes negative aspects of the season and attempts to have you cheer for disgusting, irritating people.
Movie MetropolisJohn J. Puccio...the closest thing we've had in the last twenty years to a genuine Christmas classic.
Time OutTom CharityThe movie steers a shrewd course between bracing cynicism and old-fashioned make-believe.
Common Sense MediaCharles CassadyHeartwarming family tale for both kids and adults.
Los Angeles TimesKevin ThomasAimed at kids, but written with parents in mind, The Santa Clause balances the sugar with the spice, which Allen sprinkles on just right.
Seattle TimesJeff ShannonThis is Allen's movie debut, and it's easy to see why his show is a ratings smash. There's an effortless quality to his humor, but it's also got a quietly urgent edge to it.
NetflixJames RocchiEven if the film bogs down a touch in its own sense of cuteness near the end, this film will do as a family-wide X-mas time waster if everyone has It's a Wonderful Life overload.
Washington PostDesson ThomsonThe personable star of the TV series "Home Improvement" turns this Walt Disney film around. He may not be as effervescent as, say, Robin Williams, but he's full of understated, ticklish charm.
Orlando SentinelJay BoyarI was surprised to find The Santa Clause rather easier to take than anticipated.
