EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyCharles Laughton, who wa sonly 33 but looked older, won the Best Actor Oscar for playing the titular role with such bravado.
CinePassionFernando F. CroceKorda and his humorists make sure the usual biopic solemnity is not part of this royal court
CinemaniaDan JardineDirector Alexander Korda is the chief beneficiary of Laughton's larger-than-life performance, as his conservative helmsmanship fails to provide the film with a distinctly personal stamp
ColeSmithey.comCole SmitheyThe film's most famous bit involves Laughton eating a chicken with a primal gusto that clearly defines King Henry's character as a gluttonous man devouring whatever is put before him.
Monthly Film BulletinMFB CriticsAs the film's point of view stands confessed in the title, only Henry's admirers, if any, will cavil at this well directed and acted production, which is well worth seeing.
User ReviewWizard WCharles Laughton gives an Oscar-winning performance as 14th century British monarch Henry VIII
User ReviewEverett JOne of the funniest films I've ever seen, brilliant stuff.
User ReviewElizabeth AA good film and great re-count on Henry VIII. Truly great and a good watch.
User ReviewKeith EA good biopic... but Charles Laughton gives one of the greatest on-screen performances of all time here.
User ReviewTiffany DA campy, tongue-in-cheek take on the Tudor great, Laughton's take has come to typify the modern interpretation of King. While the history isn't wholly factual, and overall would generally be about 3 1/2 stars, I am giving it a 4 simply for the experience of the piece. It really is a must-see for anglophiles, cinema buffs, and lovers of all things Oscar. [[ The real scene-stealer is Laughton's real-life wife, Elsa Lanchester, as Anne of Cleves!]]
