GuardianPeter BradshawIt's tightly plotted and contains some smart narrative shifts, but the tonal high-wire act is ultimately too ambitious for Croatian director Vinko Brean to pull off.
Playback:stlSarah BoslaughI have to tip my hat to Bresan, because I was ready to hate this film (unintended pregnancy-what a funny joke!), but he's an expert judge of tone, and I ended up enjoying this sharp satire.
User ReviewTy SA very light and amusing story of a young priest on a Dalmation Island, who realizes that the church membership is dying off, and there are virtually no children being born to replace them. Partnered with the island's Xenophobic pharmacist, and the man who runs the island's condom outlet (who is made to feel guilty by his wife for what he does) embark on a scheme to increase the birth rate by poking holes in the condoms, and switching birth control pills with vitamins. What ensues is hilarious, slap-stick at times, and occasionally shoots digs at the sometimes unrealistic or hypocritical church. This fledgling priest soon earns the admiration that extends to Rome. Their remarkable birthrate increases set people from all over the world to their little island, more specifically couples who are having problems conceiving, who feel that this miracle place is an answer to their prayers. It's a wild ride with some strange twists. Film on a Croatian island, with beautiful scenery. English subtitles nicely done.. One of my favorite comedies in a long time
