David Keyes' Cinema 2000David KeyesThe Phantom Carriage is not so much a whole film as it is a filmed collection of ideas, but the manner and enthusiasm to which they are realized is arresting, and hypnotic.
CinePassionFernando F. CroceThe double-exposure photography used throughout is a stupefying achievement of its own, an incantation of overlapping worlds and a visualization of the characters' growing awareness of the connection between body and soul.
Q Network Film DeskJames KendrickDespite all the creepiness on display, the film ultimately affirms not the emptiness of death, but rather the importance of life.
The New York Review of BooksGeoffrey O'BrienWhatever the suggestiveness of the fable, the film works on us with the bare palpability of its elements-even of its visual tricks.
User ReviewAndy FAn absolute masterpiece. This silent movie classic is utterly compelling from start to finish. It's themes are dark and the performances and visuals are breathtaking.
User ReviewNik MThe storytelling is amazing. The characters are profound and never tire audiences. The themes are extremely heavy but so well-handled and with such care. A great Swedish silent film.
User ReviewJoshua LEerie silent film with ground breaking effects. This one ranks along some of the very best.
User ReviewEdith NAlongside Nosferatu (1922), Haxan (1922), The Phantom of the Opera (starring Lon Chaney) (1925) and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), it is one of the greatest and most important horror movies of the silent era, Victor Sjostrom's direction and the cinematography by Julius Jaenzon is very gritty, stunning and ghostly. This film takes you to another world, it has its utterly creepy moments, eerie performances by the characters and the most important thing on this movie, its morals. This is one of my favourite movies (it was also Ingmar Bergman's favourite movie!), the sets are amazing too. In retrospect, the storyline is very complex and ahead of its time and this movie could take you to another world. I give it a five stars, one thing I could say it is underrated compared to Nosferatu and it is just as good as Nosferatu (well in my eyes, anyway.)
User ReviewOrlok WTechnically brilliant and filmed remarkably well, it's shocking that this was made in 1921. 90 year later the transfer to Blu-ray by Criterion is amazing and really adds amazing detail and clarity never before seen in previous releases. The film itself is a wonderful age old tale of morality and turning one's life around before it is too late. What a beautiful and inspiring piece of cinema. The use of double exposure and the wonderful atmosphere really enhance the moodiness of the film. Not just a horror film, but one that tells the morality of man, what is right and wrong and that life is short and will end for everyone are all potent topics in The Phantom Carriage. No wonder it inspired Bergman to become a film director, as he watched it dozens of times! Victor Sjöstrom gives a solid performance as he both directs and stars in the film and indeed you get a true feeling of his regret of a life poorly lived and how it affected all those around him. It's up to him whether he can use his fleeting spiritually time to bring him salvation, but it means sacrificing a lot. Highly Recommended!
