Eye for FilmJennie KermodeA film directed by the great David Lean is always a treat, and this one is no exception.
Film4Daniel EtheringtonIts dated sensibilities remain crisp and provocative thanks to the combination of quality production values and an excellent cast.
Time OutTrevor JohnstonThere's a degree of emotional subtlety here that often went missing in the director's later work.
Monthly Film BulletinMFB CriticsIt is not a restful film and does not, for example, possess the integrity such as was shown by David Lean in his treatment of Brief Encounter.
Empire MagazinePatrick PetersIt's a fascinating snapshot of middle-class mores during the post-War socialist revolution, but it cries out for a heroine of Celia Johnson's sensitivity.
New York TimesBosley CrowtherSomehow the simple expedient of raising their characters several rungs up the social and financial ladder and giving the roles to well-dressed stars has not brought a more impressive picture from the Messrs. Neame and Lean.
User ReviewKim Mwell crafted brit rom-dram from the director of 'brief encounter' which would make a gr8 dbl feature with this.
User ReviewAllen DOne of Lean's least known films but still very much the work of a fine creative talent (who makes an uncredited appearance as a speedboat driver). This is a kind of Brief Encounter 2 based on a novel by H G Wells of all people. Ann Todd is married to wealthy older Claude Rains but she can't forget her romance with Trevor Howard. Beautifully photographed in black and white, largely on European locations. A charming overlooked gem which doesn't outstay its welcome in under 90 minutes.
User ReviewHis LSort of a Brief Encounter part 2 but not quite as good and with more glamorous characters. The flashback structure didn't work so well and was rather confusing at times. The scenery and techniques were lovely but it wasn't until the last 40 minutes or so till I was really drawn in.
User ReviewAndrew JJust nothing special. Rains and Howard give decent performances, but Ann Todd in the central role is unfortuneatly weak. Just lacks the emotional obsession or technical brilliance of Lean's best work.
