Movie Reviews

Chicago Sun-Times - 10/10 by Roger EbertWhat's best about the movie is that it considers interesting adults--young and old--in an intelligent manner. After it's over we almost feel relief; there are so many movies about clods reacting moronically to romantic and/or violent situations. But we hardly ever get movies about people who seem engaging enough to spend half an hour talking with (what would you say to Charles Bronson?). Here's one that works.
Variety - 8/10 by Variety StaffThe Paper Chase has some great performances, literate screenwriting, sensitive direction and handsome production.
Chicago Reader - 6/10 by Jonathan RosenbaumAssisted by Gordon Willis's cinematography and John Houseman's performance as the demanding Professor Kingsfield, director James Bridges manages to do a fair job with the semihokey material.
Common Sense Media - 6/10 by S. Jhoanna RobledoThe love of learning is tops in classic law school tale.
Spirituality and Practice - 6/10 by Frederic and Mary Ann BrussatJohn Houseman takes center stage with his near-perfect depiction of an imposing law school professor.
Kansas City Kansan - 5/10 by Steve CrumFrightening drama of life in law school. Houseman is terrific.
New York Times - 5/10 by Vincent CanbyIt takes a long while for The Paper Chase to disintegrate, and there are some funny, intelligent sequences along the way, but by the end it has melted into a blob of clichés.
Reel Film Reviews - 5/10 by David Nusair...a fairly routine drama that never feels as though it's building to anything significant or even interesting...
User Review - 10/10 by Ralph RAs I am currently in law school I have a special affinity for this movie. My law school is not Harvard so some of what goes on there doesn't apply here, but I understand the main character's pressure to succeed, to keep up, participate, and have a life in between. Awesome flick.
User Review - 10/10 by Adam KIf only more movies were like this one. A decent plot: a first-year Harvard law student discovers the absurdity of the system he used to adore. But the film transcends its plot or characters through its production value. The tight script serves to develop the characters beyond traditional exposition and into archetypal, almost mythological figures. The cinematography is simply perfect. The whole film has a literary feeling about it. This is what cinema should be.
