Three disparate travelers, a disillusioned preacher, an unsuccessful prospector, and a larcenous, cynical con man, meet at a decrepit railroad station in the 1870s Southwest. The prospector and the preacher were witnesses at the singularly memorable rape and murder trial of the notorious Mexican outlaw Carasco. The bandit duped an aristocratic Southerner into believing he knew the location of a lost Aztec treasure. The greedy "gentleman" allows himself to be tied up while Carasco rapes his wife. These events lead to the stabbing of the husband and are related by the three eyewitnesses to the atrocity: the infamous bandit, the newlywed wife, and the dead man through an Indian shaman. Whose version of the events is true? Possibly there was a fourth witness, but can his version be trusted?

EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyPaul Newman reteams with his favorite director Martin Ritt(Hud) in this unsuccessful American version of Kurosawa's landmark 1950 film, Rashomon.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzRemake of Rashomon with a Western setting.
User ReviewJulianna YIt's a Western remake of Kurosawa's "Rashomon" (it might even be a nearly shot-by-shot remake), with several different versions of a rape and murder told by a Mexican bandit, a former Confederate soldier, and his wife. And against all odds, the movie works, for many of the same reasons that "Rashomon" works. In fact, it might follow "Rashomon" a bit too closely, as you spend a lot of time picking out the similarities and differences between the two, and find it hard to consider the movie as anything but a remake. But the transition to the Western genre works, and although Newman seems to mimic Toshiro Mifune a bit too much, on the whole he and the rest of the cast do a good job. It doesn't surpass the genius of "Rashomon" (nothing could), but I think anyone who hasn't seen Kurosawa's movie would still find this enjoyable.
User ReviewSara PA pretty darn good, if unnecessary, western remake of RASHOMON.
User ReviewConner REven though it's not amazing, this is actually really interesting and well done movie. Sadly it will always be compared to Rashomon, even though the remake really tries to be something else and is hardly shot for shot. It has some great characters, Paul Newman as Carrasco is utterly ridiculous, yet hilarious at the same time. The cinematography is beautiful and even rivals Kurosawas, so in that respect it's a very worthy remake. This really is the best possible western interpretation of the story.
User ReviewJohn R131220: Not having seen this "Rashomon", I like to think my view of this film is a little less biased. I like this movie except for a couple minor points. Right out of the gate I was sucked in. It reminded me of "The Ox-Bow Incident", another black and white western classic. A couple well-known actors. A unique and meaningful story presented in an equally unique and meaningful way. Midway through, a little bad acting combined with some poor special effects tempered my enthusiasm a bit, but I will no doubt be watching this movie again, if not acquiring it for my collection. I'll have to research how was received when released in 1964? Have a strong desire to know more about this film which is a good thing. And, I'll likely watch this "Rashomon" now. Just have to know.

User ReviewAlvaro DThis movie is inspirae by Japanese film "Rashomon". Con-man Edward G. Robinson listens to a story of a trial held recently in the town as told by a prospector Howard Da Silva and a preacher William Shatner. 3 witnesses give different story to the death of Laurence Harvey whose body is found in the desert. First version is Paul Newman, a brutal and famous outlaw who is caught, admit to the crime. He wanted to rob and rape Claire Bloom, the wife of Laurence while traveling on their wagon. He tied him up instead of killing him like usual. Later they both have a duel to defend Claire honor and he killed him. Second version is Claire version. She killed Laurence herself when Paul left after raping, she untie him but he look at her with disgust. She stab him with agony and sadness and run into the wild. Third version is a Indian doctor who found Laurence before his death. He says Laurence told him he killed himself because he couldn't live with the humiliation. Claire wanted to leave with Paul and he rejected her. So Laurence suicide. Howard later reveal all the versions are not truth and he admit to witness it all. The rape did happen. But Claire wanted the 2 men to duel and fight for her. The 2 turns out to be "coward" of sort. She reveal Laurence always tremble and puke before going to war. Laurence know Claire has been unfaithful and flirt with few men. Under her constant nagging, the 2 men duel and Laurence wanted to stab Paul with the knife but he tripped and fell with the knife stabbed himself and die. The weapon is never found. Then the 3 men hear a baby crying. Edward check the pocket and there's some gold coins which he take. Howard say he is coyote and want him to put it back. Edward at this point reveal he know that Howard took the weapon that has ruby and jewel. William question why he did that and he have a wife and five children to feed and that knife can feed them after pawning. Edward call for the arriving train. William trust Howard and let him take the baby.
User ReviewCindy IA direct remake of "Rashomon", but set in the old west rather than Japan. Paul Newman stars in the role that Toshiro Mifune played in the original -- that of a bandit (Mexican rather than Japanese) who rapes a woman and murders her husband....or did he? Pretty good if you've never had the chance to see Rashomon, or are put off by subtitles. Along with Newman, other cast members include Lawrence Harvey, Claire Bloom and Edward G. Robinson. William Shatner even makes a decent, although overly dramatic (as usual) appearance as the preacher. Interesting to see if you know Rashomon well. Many scenes are plucked directly from the original, with even the dialogue pretty much intact. Probably unnecessary, but not irritating like the Psycho remake. One flaw -- Paul Newman as a Mexican?!?! He did a good job, but those blue eyes don't quite fit the part.
User ReviewRichard PPaul Newman is fantastic and the direction and look of this film are top notch. Some great soliloquies as well. This one is worth a look.
