She says good-bye to her sisters Louise and Marie, her brother Pierre, and her beloved father and subjects herself to the stringent rules of the retrograde institution, including interior silence and excessive humility and humiliation. After a long stint working in a mental institution, Gaby/Sister Luke is finally assigned to go to the Congo, where she works with cynical but brilliant atheist Dr. Fortunati. Sister Luke proves to be a very efficient nurse and assistant, and Dr. Fortunati miraculously heals her tuberculosis. Years later she is ordered to return to Belgium, and when her motherland is invaded by the Germans, she learns that her beloved father was murdered by the enemy while he was helping wounded members of the resistance. Sister Luke finally decides to leave the religious life since she is unable to feel neutral against the invaders of her country.

THE NUN'S STORY is truly perfect work but not one that is mentioned in the same breath as other classic films from great directors like Fred Zinneman and star Audrey Hepburn. This sublime film is subtle to the extreme. Almost flat in fact, depicting the inner struggle of a nun who wishes nothing more than to be a citizen of the world, something the convent does not allow. THE NUN'S STORY takes its time. There is no emotion. No evil. No greatness. Just the struggle to define one self and become the person you must be. Simply stunning and perfect! |

| User ReviewRyan PThe Nun's Story is one of Audrey Hepburn's all-time best films and performances. While some people complain about the film being overly long (It's two-and-a-half hours), I didn't find a single minute of it to be boring. It was fascinating to watch her character become a nun through strict processes, battle her emotions and faith on a continuous basis, and her struggles as well. This film is powerful and gripping, as well as being emotional at times when her character struggles with her faith and life. This a great, underrated film that deserves to be seen more, and is also a prime example of how you make a good religious film. |
