User Review - 8/10 by Lorraine L[80/B] After four low-rent criminals hole up with their kidnapped victim in a French seaside village, things start to unravel as foibles rise to the surface in the boredom and tension. Eventually, from the very midst of their unpromising plan, a more wicked scheme begins to close its grasp upon them. This is a quiet, low-key, modestly scaled crime drama that gathers its momentum from the stark realizations of the cast within their dreamlike surroundings. In the manner of many 60s films, it evokes luminosity and ambiguity all at once. Moreno is excellent, and Boone wonderfully creepy, while Brando delivers a very honest and gripping performance, refreshingly devoid of frills or tricks. The film's less than winning title may actually offer a clue to the enigmatic, if excessive, ending. Or not. But well worth watching for those who appreciate restraint and minimalism.
User Review - 8/10 by Kelly BNot a bad caper film in which Marlon Brando and his confederates kidnap an heiress (Pamela Franklin) and hold her in an isolated French chateau. Brando has to contend with his drug-addicted girlfriend (Rita Moreno) and the fact that one of his confederates is a psychopath whom Brando suspects wants to kill the kidnap victim and all his partners to get at the ransom money; given that this member of the gang is played by a wild-eyed Richard Boone, Brando's character is probably right. Its a very tightly constructed and well-made thriller and one of Brando's better acting job from his uneven late-1960s period.
User Review - 6/10 by Christopher SUneven Euro crime thriller starts off incredibly slow - with a number of long takes where absolutely nothing happens - but it gets much better by the end. Some of the suspense sequences were expertly crafted, while others seemed strangely amateurish. Good performances, cinematography that is sometimes gritty and realistic and other times bland. But the 60s pop music score did get annoying.

Marlon Brando stars as the leader of a gang of professional criminals who kidnap the daughter of a wealthy man (Pamela Franklin) in order to get ransom money. Along with Brando are his junkie wife Vi (Rita Moreno) her brother looking for one last big score (Jess Hahn) and a thug they brought in to keep things in line (Richard Boone). Brando and Hahn want to keep things civilized so that if they are caught they aren't brought up on murder charges, but Boone doesn't really seem to care. All that matters to him is getting the money no matter how. There are some pretty good performances, and the direction's not bad. Not a particulary original film however. It's not worth going out of your way to see, but it's not worth avoiding either. Overall 2.5/4 Stars Grade = B-
User Review - 4/10 by Post GQuite poor execution of this rather banal screenplay. Pretetentious in parts, aspiring to Hitchcock or Frankenheimer, but the vapidity of the story lets down the rather clumsy direction. Brando is strangely unconvincing, and the rest of the cast is similarly distant.
User Review - 4/10 by Betty NI hated the very end of this, but everything leading up to it was excellent. Richard Boone pours on the sleaze as a methodical and dangerous manipulator, while Brando seems refreshingly improvisatory and back in form. I could have used more Lettieri, and Rita Moreno isn't given enough to do either. Stanley Myers jazz score is fantastic, especially building up to the ending. The night for night shooting is not a problem as much as the dismissive structure, which I found disappointing.
