The naive Susanne snoops on Bettina and suspects she is hiding something from her brother. When Susanne is introduced by Bettina to her mysterious friend Ivo Kern, he offers to show her Berlin and they have a date. Soon Susanne, who has fallen in love with Ivo, learns that he was a former lawyer married to Bettina but with a criminal past during the war. Now he is blackmailed by Halendar to kidnap Kastner and bring him back on the other side of the border. The plan fails and Halender asks his men to abduct Bettina to get Kastner. | Monthly Film BulletinMFB CriticsThe great weakness at the core of The Man Between is an implausibly contrived and dully written script. |
| User ReviewForrest KNot quite "The Third Man," but a worthy follow-up. The breathtaking chase through East Berlin is worth the admission alone, and Claire Bloom is charmingly plucky - a great foil to James Mason's brooding, sarcastic anti-hero. I was lucky enough to catch it at Film Forum and it was exhilarating on the big screen. (Also, I'm pretty sure I was sitting behind Jennifer Connelly, so that's pretty exciting as well!) |
| User ReviewOrlok WImpeccably acted and atmospheric post-war drama!! |
| User ReviewDaniel IAnother sharply-crafted suspense thriller from director Carol Reed evokes an effective atmosphere of post-War Berlin with excellent black and white cinematography and strong performances from James Mason and Claire Bloom. Maybe not as polished as some of Reed's other work, but solid old-fashioned entertainment. |
