Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 6/10 by Dennis SchwartzA mildly funny screwball comedy-mystery thriller that is overall more thirties stylish than witty.
User Review - 10/10 by Daryl KOne of funniest screwball comedies of all, highly underrated
User Review - 8/10 by Dave JTuesday, July 15, 2014 (1938) The Mad Miss Manton MYSTERY COMEDY/ ROMANCE The first of three entertaining films Barbara Stanwyck starred with fellow actor Henry Fonda. She plays, wealthy socialite, Melsa Manton who stumbled onto a dead body upon visiting someone's apartment. She then calls the police, but by the time they arrived the body was no where to be found with the press defaming her by accusing her that she made the whole thing up to get publicity for all her charity work. And it is Peter Ames played by Fonda that she plans to sue for a million dollars since it was his article. She then becomes eager to also involve 7 of her closest socialite friends to help her prove she wasn't making the whole thing up since they all do charity work too. Except that the person who's also tagging along with them is the person she's suing for a million dollars for libel who is Peter Ames himself who gets the help from the police. It's just one peculiar circumstance after another which the murder aspect of it is only there as a backdrop to the chemistry between Fonda and Stanwyck. Because I liked Fonda and Stanwyck in "The Lady Eve" I felt that the chemistry was still the same in this one as well except that it's Fonda who is pursuing Stanwyck this time. And back in the early 1940's, news reporters used to work side by side with the police and the film makes great use of this type situation. 3 out of 4 stars
User Review - 8/10 by jim dAdmittedly minor film, that I think is a real find. Excellent pre-Lady Eve pairing of Fonda and Stanwyck. I have a soft spot for the mystery-comedy sub-genre, and this one does not disappoint.
User Review - 8/10 by Gregory Wgood to see Fonda/Stanwyck paired up again
User Review - 8/10 by Frances HCute, funny comedic murder mystery with Stanwyck and Fonda young and charming, and a cast of classic Hollywood character actors, with a very tongue-in-cheek script.
User Review - 8/10 by Ashley HThe Mad Miss Manton is a fantastic film. It is about Miss Manton and her bevy of high-society gals who solve a mystery. Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda give incredible performances. The screenplay is good but a little slow in places. Leigh Jason did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the humor and mystery. The Mad Miss Manton is a must see.
User Review - 6/10 by jay nEvening gowns, fur coats and murder. Don't you crack wise at me
User Review - 6/10 by Orlok WThis movie, a warm-up for Stanwyck and Fonda for the later 'The Lady Eve', is entirely enjoyable. A lighthearted piece of fluff, true, but everybody is having such a good time that it becomes totally infectious... An excellent look at things to come--This is one pip of a movie. An obscure comedy that truly utilizes all the cast members involved in a great screwball of a movie. Barbara Stanwyck in another "I saw the body until it disappeared" kind of farce, giving the audience a good time as she tangles with unbelieving police inspector (Sam Levene) and a newspaper reporter looking for a good story (Henry Fonda)... Bouncing Debs!!
User Review - 6/10 by Kevin RI'm not crazy, I tell you... Melsa Manton is a Hollywood beauty that discovers a murdered body. The body turns up missing and she becomes the target of scrutiny and the police do not believe she is telling the truth. She works with a guy who adores her and hopes to win her hand by tracking down the killers and missing body. "You're a nasty creature." Leigh Jason, director of Wise Girls, Model Wife, Lady for a Night, Out of the Blue, Meet Me on Broadway, The Festival Girls, and The Choppers, delivers The Mad Miss Manton. The storyline for this picture is a bit cliché and just okay. The acting is very fun and well done. The cast includes Henry Fonda, Barbara Stanwyck, Sam Levene, and Hattie McDaniel. "He says that to everybody." I enjoy Henry Fonda pictures and grabbed this thriller off Turner Classic Movies (TCM) this past Halloween season. This was okay and fun to watch these characters in these fun and charismatic scenaios. The plot was just average but this was worth seeing once. "Where did you find the body?" Grade: C+
