From the scene in front of the log cabin to the assassination at Ford's Theatre in Washington, one is gripped. Lincoln's courtship culminated in his marriage with Mary Todd. He struggles along in abject poverty until he is nominated for United States Senator. He opposes Stephen Douglas, and it was in his debate that he proved himself not only a rhetorician but a man of wholesome and broad-minded ideas. He was defeated but in 1860 was elected President. What happened subsequently is familiar to all Americans. Lincoln's Gettysburg address, succinct but powerful, is considered one of the gems of oratory.
