The New York TimesRichard EderThe Last Hard Men is not just a horse opera; it's practically Tristan and Isolde. Only the love-death relation isn't between a man and a woman but between a retired lawman and a halfbreed Navajo who is obsessed with the notion of killing him.
User ReviewJan DAndrew V. McLaglens' hard hitting and nasty 1976 western "The Last Hard Men" sees the mighty James Coburn and the late great Charlton Heston go toe-to-toe in a dusty and blood soaked showdown in the Sonoran Desert. James Coburn plays Zach Provo an escaped convict hell-bent on getting revenge on Sam Burgade a now retierd peace officer who was responsible for sending Zach to jail and killing his woman. Provo and his gang, members of the same ragged chaingang he escaped from, kidnaps Burgade's daughter and heads for the Mexican border. The carnage that follows echoes both Peckinpah and Leone.
User ReviewCharles TIt was okay did not like the two men always wanting to rape Heston's daughter.
User ReviewBruce sCharlton Heston plays a retired lawman named Sam Burgade who goes after an escaped bunch of convicts led by a half breed outlaw Zach Provo (James Coburn). The hunt becomes even more personal when Heston's daughter (Barbara Hershey) is kidnapped by Provo who wants to torture Charlton Heston for killing his wife eleven years previous when he was a sheriff. Overall it's an entertaining western flick with some gory and violent scenes including sexual degradation.
User ReviewThomas BGood western! Ya gotta be tough if you wanna be an outlaw!
User ReviewOrlok WFairly average western from the 70s with strong performances by James Coburn, and Charlton Heston, good enough supporting cast. Good entertainment, but not great.
User ReviewEric EBrutally realistic western, has Heston hunting down kidnappers of his Daughter. While most Westerns glamorize the era, this one does no such thing, it's not subtle, & not for the squeamish.
User ReviewJames CCharlton Heston & James Coburn are two hard nosed bastards who want to kill each other slowly. Good western w/ a simple tale of law man chasing the escaped convicts but the two leads make it worth something more
User ReviewJoshua LTries too hard to shock us by delivering pointless scenes of blood, death and rape.
