Leave your thoughts about The Jimmy Show.
Film ThreatChris GoreRewarding for its brash originality and daring in etching a portrait of a man who refuses to take life's disappointments lying down.
Village VoiceLeslie CamhiBacked by a strong supporting cast, Whaley makes Jimmy a vivid character, but he never achieves anything like the tragic grandeur of a Willy Loman. He's at once too earnest and too unappealing.
Film Freak CentralBill ChambersSo faithful to the doldrums of the not-quite-urban, not-quite-suburban milieu as to have viewers recoiling from the reality check.
New York Daily NewsJack MathewsThe movie is as unpleasant as its hero, and the film audience gets no more for its money than the customers at the Laughing Stock. Still, watching Whaley take Jimmy down his tortured path has some morbid appeal -- like a train wreck in progress.
New York PostV.A. MusettoWhaley gives an earnest performance, especially when he's articulating his frustrations during his monologues. But it's all relentlessly glum. The film, like Jimmy's routines, could use a few good laughs.
The New York TimesStephen HoldenThe kind of movie that is a must to avoid on a bad day. Even on a good one, it could send you into a funk.
TV Guide MagazineMaitland McDonaghWhaley's determination to immerse you in sheer, unrelenting wretchedness is exhausting.
VarietyScott FoundasPic has a stagy, boxed-in feel. Both visually and energetically, it suggests something that has been done onstage to the point of mechanized repetition. And even though Whaley is supposed to be playing a disillusioned character, it's the actor himself who seems fatigued and over-rehearsed.
User ReviewMike TSuch a great film. It speaks to me like no other. Jimmy just wants to be happy but as hard as he tries it's always just beyond his reach. Eventually he realizes that everything he always wanted was right in front of him all along, but it's too late.
User ReviewJohn Tfrank whaley, writes directs and stars, as jimy a wannabee stand up comedian. who gets a chance in a comedy club, hes chuffed, even though its a open mike night, but a pregnancy and a dead end job, gets in way, will he live his dream, 9 months later hes doing his routine, but his act is more a guy getting thoughts out of his life, and not comedy, various jobs and caring for mother, impact life some more, and more of life gets into his stand up routine, whaley is acting well in this, showing his age, and lots of scenery to chew on, up there with swimming with sharks for best performance by him
