Leave your thoughts about The Immortalists.
The Hollywood ReporterJohn DeForeSubjects Bill Andrews and Aubrey de Grey are colorful in quite different but complementary ways.
RogerEbert.comGodfrey CheshireIt is nonetheless a very well-mounted film, with outstanding contributions in Alvarado’s cinematography and Eric Andrew Kuhn’s subtly expressive score.
Los Angeles TimesMichael RechtshaffenThe age-old search for the fountain of youth is engagingly appraised in The Immortalists, a lively documentary focusing on a pair of very different biomedical scientists who are equally obsessed with eradicating the ravages of time.
The New York TimesNicolas RapoldThis sly documentary rises above its speculative hook by shifting to show the very human, and very mortal, sides of these would-be warriors of eternity.
The A.V. ClubKeith UhlichWould that the film encouraged some deeper thought on the matter instead of inviting viewers to gawk at the subjects as if they were freak-show attractions.
Village VoiceMichelle OrangeDirectors Jason Sussberg and David Alvarado present a study of two eccentrics without pushing too hard against their premise.
Slant MagazineOleg IvanovSome voices of reason and skepticism do make an appearance to rebut and deflate Bill and Aubrey's monumental claims, but aren't allowed to fully elaborate on their arguments.
User ReviewScott HI wasn't sure what to expect when I went to see The Immoralists, but I was afraid it would be boring science or freak show theatre. Instead I got to watch a deep character study that raised more questions than answers. (And I mean that as a compliment. I hate when docs tell you what you should think.) Not only did I spend the entire screening asking if I would want to live forever, but the film stayed with me for days afterwards and the post-screening chat with my friends was fascinating.
User ReviewPolina BThis film will not give you the key to Immortality but instead will become a source of infinite debates on the matter and better understanding of true motives that drive us to a simple desire not to disappear into the void.
User ReviewBill AI caught this great film at the South By Southwest Film Festival in Austin this March. What a fascinating profile on two quirky geniuses determined to crack the codes on life longevity. Not being a science buff, I was amazed to be so engaged by the juxtaposing story which so beautifully wove scientific info into a tale of non-conforming micro-biologists who love life and want to keep their loved ones alive as long as possible. When the credits began to roll, my first thought was, "How in the world did they make an hour-plus film about science so incredibly interesting?" (Please don't quote me around any Science teachers!)
