Movie Reviews

F5 (Wichita, KS) - 10/10 by Jake EukerGuinness creates a unique, full-bodied porttrait of the artist as an always-young man.
Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 9/10 by Dennis SchwartzIt smacks more of an Ealing low-brow whimsical comedy than anything more artistic.
Spirituality and Practice - 9/10 by Frederic and Mary Ann BrussatA wonderfully colorful screen rendition of Joyce Cary's 1944 novel about an eccentric artist
User Review - 10/10 by James HWonderful - so realistic its almost abstract... Guinness acts a rough, unsociable painter whos determination and imagination get him in tight corners - a sensational film.
User Review - 10/10 by Alec BA great portrayal of artistic genius/madness. Doing the film as a comedy is probably what makes most of whats being said about the impossibility of artistic fulfillment more palatable. Guinness' performance is perfection.
User Review - 10/10 by Mark BI LOVE THIS MOVIE. If you have ever been artistically inspired you'd be hard pressed to not feel this film resonate with you. My art teacher in high school, Don Sanders, screened this film every year to his classes. I finally stole his VHS copy that he recorded off of TV. Years later I finally found him a commercial copy and sent it to him. I still have his original. I think it is imbued with some kind of magic.
User Review - 10/10 by Sean RIf you get a chance, this is one of the best comedies about art and artists I've ever seen, and you should check it out. I garuntee you won't be dissapointed!! Alec Guiness is so great in this role, and he wrote the script to boot. Just do it!!
User Review - 10/10 by John BTakes you into the mind of an artist in one of Alec Guiness's greatest and most overlooked performances. A joy.
User Review - 10/10 by Stephanie MBased on the book by Joyce Carey, Alec Guinness gives a gentle and touching performance. The scene in which he confronts the blank wall for the first time is perhaps one of the finest portrayals of what being an artist is about. Very much of its time, Michael Gough is excellent, very 50's Art School feel. Can never cross Battersea Bridge, since I first saw it, without seeing Gully Jimpson shuffling by. The walk is a masterful touch...and, one of the funniest scenes ever, the look on the face of the old sea captain when someone opens the door of the pub and the wind blows the froth off his beer. British humour at its best.
User Review - 10/10 by Gray LAn under rated classic. This film features my favorite Alec Guinness performance, a man mostly known by this generation as Obi Wan Kenobi. It's hilarious, and touching. It's easily one of the best films about art. It's kinda sad that 88% are not even interested in it.
