In 1980s Britain, a group of young men at Cutlers' Grammar School all have the brains, and the will to earn the chance of getting accepted in the finest universities in the nation, Oxford and Cambridge. Despite the fine teaching by excellent professionals like Mrs. Dorothy Lintott (Frances de la Tour) in history and the intellectually enthusiastic Mr. Hector (Richard Griffiths) in General Studies, the Headmaster (Clive Merrison) is not satisfied. He signs on the young Irwin (Stephen Campbell Moore) to polish the students' style to give them the best chance. In this mix of intellectualism and creative spirit that guides a rigorous preparation regime for that ultimate educational brass ring, the lives of the randy students and the ostensibly restrained faculty intertwine that would change their lives forever.

Movie Reviews

Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC) - 10/10 by Ken HankeIn the world of movies, it's a rare treat to find anything as sophisticated and witty as Alan Bennett's screenplay.
Baltimore Sun - 10/10 by Michael SragowIn The History Boys, as in all of Bennett's work, irony is what the characters live and breathe - and I mean irony in its truest sense, of using language to present opposite and often sly alternatives to accepted wisdom.
Bangor Daily News (Maine) - 9/10 by Christopher SmithWith the writing way above board and insights fueling the story forward with heart and bawdy comedy, "The History Boys" is amiably off-center, sure, but it finds its core and leaves its mark.
Boston Globe - 9/10 by Wesley MorrisThis is achingly perceptive writing that director Nicholas Hytner, working with the same superb cast that performed in London and on Broadway, brings to life.
Chicago Sun-Times - 9/10 by Hedy Weiss[An] exuberantly free-spirited but faithful movie version of Alan Bennett's masterful hit play about education, class, sex, love, death, memory and that often equally fantastical thing we call history.
The A.V. Club - 9/10 by Nathan RabinHistory Boys boasts a dazzling verbal cleverness--the gleeful rat-a-tat of snappy banter expertly executed--that doesn't keep it from also being deeply, exquisitely sad.
Arizona Republic - 9/10 by Bill MullerAlthough grounded in the fact-based world of academia, The History Boys offers little of substance.
Arkansas Democrat-Gazette - 9/10 by Philip Martin.. gentle and sweet, ..all the more charming for its faith in its presumptive audience. It's heartening to come across a popular entertainment ...not pitched at the dull normal demographic.
Washington Post - 8/10 by Peter MarksThe movie was made while the actors were still performing the stage version, and they modulate their performances for the screen admirably, even if the film is not quite as engaging as the play.
Old School Reviews - 8/10 by John A. Nesbitrefreshing--a film that doesn't insult the audience's intelligence
