Independent on SundayQuentin CurtisIt aims to do more than just entertain. It's not a failure, but it doesn't quite soar.
User ReviewDave JMonday, March 31, 2014 (1992) The Hawk SUSPENSE THRILLER Helen Mirren practically had to carry this movie on her shoulders, for it's effectiveness may have been better had it been short and tighter. She plays Annie Marsh, a housewife of two children, suspecting that her husband can possibly be a serial killer, people are calling "The Hawk" because victims are usually found with their eyes gauged out which is similar to what a hawk would do. With a fast forward button on specific scenes while playing on some unnecessary scenes, this movie isn't that bad, considering what the actors/ actresses had to work with. Some viewers may be disappointed with the fact, that there's no explanation regarding the serial killer's motivations for going on to this killing spree in the first place. 2.5 out of 4 stars
User ReviewShawn WDespite the title, not a biography of former Montreal Expos outfielder Andre Dawson. That would have been better. Here, a woman suspects her husband is a serial killer who actually turns out to be his best friend. Failed to create much suspense.
User ReviewRoger P"The Hawk" is a very disappointing psychological thriller. Starring Helen Mirren, and boasting a strong supporting cast of top-notch British character actors, it promises much but fails to deliver. Helen Mirren plays the part of Anne, a housewife with a history of mental health problems, the mother of two young children, who lives in the north of England. She comes to believe that her husband, a travelling service engineer who has been away from home on many of the relevant occasions, is a serial killer whom the media have dubbed "The Hawk" (because he gouges out the eyes of his female victims). So, the basic premise of the plot is not a bad one. And the acting is OK. The problem is that the film is plodding and dull - and provides very little in the way of real suspense. In addition, the script is poor. The concluding double twist is unconvincing in the light of what has preceded it and there are several scenes throughout the film that are simply implausible. For example, I could not understand Anne's decision to confide her suspicions in a neighbour and friend with whom she is not on particularly close terms. And a pivotal scene towards the end of the film that occurs in a car disposal site is frankly ludicrous. 4/10.
User ReviewMichael WThis provided a good chance for Helen Mirren to move on from her Prime Suspect television series, and she provides a reasonably good performance. It's just a shame that the film isn't very good.
