Leave your thoughts about The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker.
Chicago Sun-TimesRichard RoeperIt was a feel-good story that turned horribly tragic.
Rolling StoneMarlow SternIt’s far more effective as an indictment against media rapaciousness, as well as their treatment of the homeless and mentally unwell.
UproxxVince ManciniThe Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker was smart to explore this subject and in many ways is a good start, but as it stands feels frustratingly incomplete. Sometimes maybe competing doc projects are a good thing.
User ReviewchemicalEReally liked the documentary. They should have included other perspective, though and should have included some analysis and study on mental health issues that Kai was going through. Also, I did some reading later and the trial itself had some interesting elements that were not shown in the documentary. So, in all a good watch about ills of media, celebrity, society and mental illness, but a lot more could and should have been shown.
User ReviewsweetzeroWrong person in the wrong place at the wrong time.Summary of how the mainstream media uncontrollably turns a person with problems into a phenomenon. The crucial part of the documentary is the way in which people try to take advantage of Kai even though they know how out of control he is.The so-called regret they experienced afterwards is not believable at all.I especially liked two parts. The first is what the victim's neighbors said about the media. The second was Kai's question at the time of questioning whether the state of New Jersey still had the death penalty. In short, the media's desire to make stupid and dangerous people famous must stop.
