In 1962, the Marine Corps family, the Meechums - parents Lieutenant Colonel Wilbur "Bull" Meechum and Lillian Meechum, and their four children Ben Meechum, Mary Anne Meechum, Karen Meechum and Matthew Meechum - are moving like they do most years, this time to Beaufort, South Carolina. Bull - nicknamed "the Great Santini" - is known as a great pilot, but has gotten into much trouble in the past for his sophomoric behavior. He runs his family much as a military commander, where they are all to obey his orders without question. Everything he does within the family context he reasons is to build character, but in reality everything ends up being about him. The oldest Ben, approaching manhood, is the one of his offspring who has the greatest issue with his father. Ben wants his respect, but isn't sure if he really loves him. As Ben goes through his senior year in high school, his attempts to play varsity basketball and an incident between black Toomer Smalls - his friend and their cook Arrabella Smalls' son - and racist Red Petus may forever change the dynamic between father and son.

Chicago Sun-TimesRoger EbertSentimental without being corny, a tearjerker with dignity. The Great Santini is a movie to seek out and to treasure.
Creative LoafingMatt BrunsonThis is one of those special films that moves effortlessly between tension, tears and laughs ... Robert Duvall's performance runs neck-and-neck with his Lonesome Dove turn as his career best.
ColeSmithey.comCole SmitheyAn emotionally devastating drama with a first rate performance from Robert Duvall.
The New York TimesVincent CanbyMr. Duvall, Miss Danner and Mr. O'Keefe are the main reasons you should see The Great Santini. They play together with the kind of ease and self-assurance that, in a movie, is as exhilarating as it is rare.
Washington PostJames L. Rowe Jr.Carlino's direction doesn't help: he was responsible for the atrocious Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea, and The Great Santini suffers from the same triteness, with its Deep South setting and a 'progressive' racial subplot that plunges deep into tear-jerk territory. See it for the acting; wallow in the sentiment.
The New YorkerPauline KaelOvercalculated, thoroughly false humanist mush—one of those “real movies about real people” without a single authentic moment.
User ReviewConrad MJust watched it for the first time because I never knew it existed!
User ReviewJ FI love this movie - it's probably a 4 star movie but I saw it first as a kid so it gets a nostalgia star - lol.
User ReviewKyle BI'm actually very surprised at how much I loved this movie. Going into it I expected some military movie but it's actually a family drama. Robert Duvall is great but the knock out performances come from Blythe Danner and Michael O'Keefe. Lisa Jane Persky is a scene stellar as the young daughter and adds nice comedic moments to an often times dark movie. It's well written and directed and I can't speak more highly of this great film.
User ReviewTroy HPainful at times to watch, especially for those of us with father issues, but nonetheless an absolutely outstanding movie.
