MovielineStephen FarberThe unlikely pairing of John Grisham and Robert Altman proves rewarding for both partners.
Entertainment WeeklyOwen GleibermanBranagh, chewing on a plummy Georgia accent, makes the divorced, boozing, and womanizing Magruder a smug yet touchingly vulnerable legal player.
Combustible CelluloidJeffrey M. AndersonAltman and his great cast make the most of the material and deliver a solid movie.
Urban CinefileUrban Cinefile CriticsIt's Branagh that holds this film together, and he does well, and it's a taut thriller, but one that lacks the panache of an Altman film.
Chicago Sun-TimesRoger EbertIt's all atmospheric, quirky and entertaining: the kind of neo-noir in which old-fashioned characters have updated problems.
ReelViewsJames BerardinelliThe result is an entertaining and sporadically engrossing two hours.
San Francisco ChronicleMick LaSalleThere's great pleasure in watching a movie in which the director has thought out everything beforehand.
Los Angeles TimesJack MathewsAltman had a fine time composing difficult shots, through screens, bushes and sheets of rain, and Chungwei's images, sometimes delicate, sometimes harsh, stick with you long after you've forgotten their context.
TheMovieReport.comMichael DequinaThis odd assemblage of talent suggests a most unusual film, but there's just about nothing unconventional about this thriller, which gets the formulaic job done -- with a considerable amount of style.
Chicago ReaderJonathan RosenbaumUnless one counts a few running gibes against lawyers that can easily be imagined coming from Grisham, Altman basically chooses to treat this hackneyed story straight.
