But when Germany invaded France in 1940, Americans were ordered to repatriate to the U.S., and John was sent to live with his relatives in Texas. There, he learned English and worked at the local soda fountain, becoming Americanized; writing to Malou often, but never receiving a reply. When the U.S. entered the war, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. Struggling through training, he became a bombardier stationed in England, flying both bombing and clandestine resistance leaflet missions over France and, when reassigned to the Publicity and Psychological Warfare Division, serving on the ground on D-Day. Unknown to John, Malou and Jacques were risking their lives working with the French Resistance to defeat the Nazis. On the eve of the Liberation of Paris, John raced to learn Malous fate and find meaning in his own life.
