Movie Reviews

Boston Globe - 10/10 by Michael BlowenA gross-your-eyes-out horror movie that is also the year's most poignant romance.
Wall Street Journal - 9/10 by Julie SalamonDavid Cronenberg's remake of the 1958 horror classic The Fly is not for the squeamish. Casting Jeff Goldblum was a good choice as he brings a quirky, common touch to the spacey scientist role.
Chicago Reader - 6/10 by Pat GrahamIt's an interesting experiment Cronenberg's attempted, if ultimately in the wrong direction.
The New York Times - 6/10 by Caryn JamesA film that tries to be too many things at once - funny but not campy, sad and scary, a horror story and a human tragedy
User Review - 10/10 by twighaileyThought provokingly, and disgustingly terrifying. I now know the mad genius that is David Cronenburg. The most **** up love story of all time.
User Review - 10/10 by makemenuconfigThe atmosphere, the characters, the story, the music, the performances, the special effects. They all combine neatly into this perfect mixture of character story horror drama. Trully a masterpiece.
User Review - 10/10 by TheNewSpielbergOne of my all time favorites from the 1980s horror cycle. A scientist's genes are mixed with that of a common house fly and soon he begins to transform into a giant half man, half fly creature. In the meantime he is helped through his deeply horrifying problem by his loving girlfriend. I love the effects, which still look realistic here in 2011 and the music is amazing and sounds more like an operatic piece than a horror soundtrack.
User Review - 10/10 by csjThe Fly is truly one of the best movies of the 1980s and its merits are numerous: Jeff Goldblum's portrayal of a man's descent into madness is both tragic and harrowing; its imaginative premise allows it to explore the philosophical question of what separates man from animal; it fleshes out its characters so well that by its conclusion the viewer's sympathies to the characters shift almost completely. It is both nuanced and shocking whenever the story demands. In the hands of a lesser director the movie could have simply been another stereotypical '80s horror creature feature, but Cronenberg elevates it to something much more high concept and exhilarating.
User Review - 10/10 by inaneswineWho knew that the adaptation of a '50s B-movie into such a grotesque-looking film could result in one of the most moving horror stories ever told? Pogue and Cronenberg devise an almost Shakespearian sense of tragedy in their screenplay, with the chemistry between Goldblum and Davis selling the emotion of it perfectly. And while the special effects are repulsive enough to turn the strongest of stomachs, one has to admire the craftsmanship of it. Simply the best remake ever committed to film.
User Review - 10/10 by quentntarantadoThe movie is my go-to for romance. It is my favorite Valentine's Day movie. I swoon over their relationship. There are quarrels, there are moments they must separate, but she ultimately shows her devotion to him. He does not deserve her but likely he is not in the right mind (an understatement). Her love is the kind I aspire to achieve.
