Out of the blue, the vessel faces a weird storm and they find they have traveled back in time to the eve of the attack of Pearl Harbor on 06 December 1941. When the two Japanese Zeros attack the motorboat of Senator Samuel Chapman, the crew of the Nimitz rescues the senator and his assistant Laurel Scott. But Lasky soon learns the senator had disappeared on that day and Capt. Matthew Yelland is planning to attack the Japanese. Will these actions create a time paradox?

VarietyVariety StaffAs a documentary on the USS Nimitz, The Final Countdown is wonderful. As entertainment, however, it has the feeling of a telepic that strayed onto the big screen.
IGNAndy PatrizioIt's a fun film that presents an interesting scenario and raises a unique possibility. What it lacks in depth and acting skills it more than makes up for as a thoroughly enjoyable popcorn film.
NewsweekDavid AnsenThis is the kind of movie that some kids would probably enjoy - it's filled with technology, special effects and action. But it just doesn't make any sense. And It lacks the wit to have fun with its time travel paradoxes, as last year's wonderful Time After Time did. It just plows ahead. Or behind. Or somewhere.
The Globe and Mail (Toronto)Jay ScottAs a documentary on the USS Nimitz, The Final Countdown is wonderful. As entertainment, however, it has the feeling of a telepic that strayed onto the big screen. The magnificent production values provided by setting the film on the world's largest nuclear-powered aircraft carrier can't transcend the predictable cleverness of a plot that will seem overly familiar to viewers raised on Twilight Zone reruns.
New York TimesVincent CanbyThe special effects are funnier than, I suspect, they were intended to be.

eFilmCritic.comBrian MckayGreat what if sci-fi with a nuclear aircraft carrier, a time warp, and the attack on Pearl Harbor.
User ReviewGordon STerrific movie. Makes ya wonder what we would of done .... if we could go back
User ReviewTim LGreat movie with a great cast. If you like military air craft this is military air craft porn wrapped around a good story. This was one of my favorite movies as a child and still is. If you like sci-fi and a good story then sit back and enjoy.
User ReviewRyan GHard to believe this excellent movie came out in 1980, It was really enjoyable then and still enjoyable today. Great to see the carrier ops from 1980 time frame which haven't change much except for the aircraft on board the carrier. The Nimitz time travels back to the day before pearl harbor an is drawn into battle with Japan, well almost. 5 stars 9-18-12
